EYS Turbos - EDP 2009 Futures North Red Flight Champions

It's been a long time coming...so here is a VERY late recap of final game of the EDP Spring season, when the Turbos clinched the EDP 2009 Futures North Flight Championship!

EDP Game #8: EYS Turbos (6-1-0) vs. Madison Area YMCA Coyotes (1-3-2) (5/20/18)

The EYS Turbos took to the field on a sunny May day leading the table in the EDP Futures North Red division. It was their last game in the season, and there was only one team left in the league that could catch them. The CenterCourt team who the Turbos beat in week 4 could still catch them in points if the Turbos didn't win out to end the season. They controlled their own destiny...and they weren't going to be denied.

The Turbos would go into the game a man down, as J. Agudelo was still recovering from an injury to his foot. In his absence some players would have to do double duty as the forward position to keep legs fresh. One of those players, was L. Henriques...who wasted no time in making his presence known in this game. It took the Turbos just 3 seconds to get on the scoreboard in this one as D. Zokner would play the opening kickoff back to D. Quishpi, who would send a moonshot up to the darting L. Henriques. L. Henriques would play the ball on the first bounce and rip it right into the back of the net to the keeper's left!

Turbos lead 1-0 in the 1st minute!!!

It was exactly the start the Turbos were looking for as they put the opposing Madison team back on their heals early. The Turbos didn't let the pressure of after that first goal. They kept pushing. Minutes later, I. Nieves almost connected with M. Shamy as he sent a ball from the right side all the way across the goal to M. Shamy running in from the left side, but the ball was just a bit out of his reach as he stretched for the shot and put it just wide. Not too long after that, N. Henriques would intercept a pass and send O. Rico down the right sideline. She would cut in towards goal and let go a shot from just outside the penalty box that went just past the post. The Turbos were pressing to increase the lead, but it wasn't coming.

On the other end of the field, G. Falcon in goal, along with D. Lyons, N. Henriques, D. Quishpi and L. Henriques playing defense did their part. They were kept busy early and often as well. In the 15th and 20th minutes, the Madison team was able to break through however, and take a 2-1 lead.

Turbos down 2-1 in the 20th minute.

Just as the half was ending, the Turbos would pull one back on an indirect kick. D. Quishpi was rushing in form his left back position and was taken down about 20 yards from goal. He took a few steps from the ball as C. Henao lined up with next to him. C. Henao would run up and tap the ball forward..and D. Quishipi would make no mistake and lift the ball high in the air and into the back of the net!

Turbos tied 2-2 in the 30th minute!!!

That half would end with the score tied at 2.

The second half would start much slower than the first with both teams now accustomed to each other's playing style. It wouldn't be until the 42nd minute when the tie would be broken. L. Henriques would do it again...not once, but twice more in the second half. The first would come in the 42nd minute after C. Henao caused a turnover by tracking back on defense. He would steal the ball deep in his defense zone and quickly turn the ball upfield. With a quick look up, he saw L. Henriques trying to split two defenders and sent a through ball that seemed to have eyes as it went past the entire midfield, past two defenders, and straight into the path of where L. Henriques was running. With a quick move to his strong foot, he teed up a shot and blasted one into the back of the net!

Turbos lead 3-2 in the 42nd minute!!!

Just 5 minutes later, L. Henriques would tally his 3rd on the day off a cross from N. Osorto. N. Henriques would play a free kick from the back and straight up the left sideline to N. Osorto. With a defender charging him, N. Osorto was able to sneak the ball past him and push it up to himself in space. He would look to the middle and send a waist high ball across the box where L. Herniques would take it on one hop and drill one into the top of the net over the keeper!

Turbos lead 4-2 in the 47th minute!!!

...but the Turbos weren't done. After having provided an assist on the last goal, N. Osorto would be the recipient of a great feed from I. Contreras to net one of his own. The Turbos charged up the field with D. Zokner leading the rush. Surrounded by defenders, he would play the ball upfield to I. Contreras at forward. With his back to the net, and two defenders collapsing on him, I. Contreras quickly turned and found a wide open N. Osorto darting in from the left side. He would lay the ball up to him on, and N. Osorto would catch up to it on the run and waste not time in finessing a ball to the opposite side of the goal and into the back of the net!

Turbos lead 5-2 in the 53rd minute!!!

The Madison team would quickly pull one back a minute later as the Turbos were maybe still celebrating their last goal.

Turbos lead 5-3 in the 54th minute.

Having just given one up, the Turbos didn't seem too pleased..and the charged back down the field to try and get one back. M. Shamy would lead the charge from the left as he barreled down the field leaving defenders scattered behind him. He would run out of room in the final third of the field and lay the ball off to the center where D. Zokner was waiting. He thought about taking a shot, but there were too many defenders in his way. Instead, D. Zokner passed the ball back to D. Lyons charging up from his defensive position. D. Lyons took advantage of the opportunity and sent a one time shot towards the goal. It was a high shot...too high for the keeper to reach, and landed safely in the back of the net!

Turbos lead 6-3 in the 56th minute!!!

The Turbos were counting the minutes...and finally the game ending whistle blew!

Turbos win 6-3!!! ...and with the win they would finish the season with 7 wins, 1 draw and NO losses!! The undefeated season they set out to accomplish was theirs..and with it, the EDP 2009 NORTH RED DIVISION TITLE!!!

It was a long season...full of ups and downs and injuries...fields that were too big to be played on...and fields that weren't even marked for soccer. Through it all, the EYS Turbos prevailed. They picked each other up when they were down...they rooted for and encouraged each other throughout..and most importantly, had tons of fun in the process!! They showed what true teamwork and selfishness can accomplish when they are all playing for each other. The EYS U9 Turbos fought hard together..and they EARNED their league title!
