HOW ABOUT THEM TURBOS!!!!!
The EYS Turbos had a week off from EDP play this week, and filled the vacancy in the schedule with their second tournament of the Fall season. The Turbos took part in the Pequannock Fall Classic on Columbus Day weekend, playing 4 games over 2 days...and putting on a show for the ages!!
DAY 1
Game 1: EYS Turbos vs. Montclair United
The opening game of the tournament had the Turbos facing off against the Montclair United squad. Montclair was already warmed up, having played their first game of the tournament earlier in the day and defeating the team from Wayne by the score of 3-1. This would be the Turbos first game of the day.
The Montclair team was physically much bigger than the Turbos...but the Turbos didn't seem too shaken by their size. The game got off to a slow pace as both teams felt each other out for a while. There was a lot of back and forth midfield play for the first 5 minutes of game play, with the Turbos making a few runs deep into the offensive zone, while allowing NOTHING to get past their back line. In goal, G. Falcon only had to make a couple of saves early as the defensive pairings D. Quishpi, N. Henriques and L. Henriques made sure no one was getting near their goalie on this day.
In the 5th minute, the Turbos would break through for the first goal of the game. I Nieves played a ball up the middle to D. Zokner, who quickly sent a return pass up the right sideline for a beautiful give and go. I. Nieves caught up to the leading pass and put the Turbos on the board with a shot into the back of the net!
Turbos Leads 1-0!!!
The game would settle down again after the first goal as the midfield of O. Rico, C. Henao and M. Shamy took charge of the middle playing the ball wide up the wings and getting some great crosses into L. Henriques for some chances that would go just wide of the goal. Then in the 14th minute, the Turbos would strike again. C. Henao would take a pass from the right side and switch the play with a great through ball to the left for the rushing N. Osorto. Similar to the first goal, but this time on the opposite wing, N. Osorto rushed in and ripped a shot into the back of the net to extend the Turbos lead!
Turbos lead 2-0!!!
It didn't take long for the Turbos to strike again. They were in a groove and looking to put their opponent away! After a shot from M. Shamy was saved, D. Quishpi would run in at top speed to steal a pass from the back line and walk in on goal. Calm and collected, he took his time, picked his spot and placed the ball high into the net in the 16th minute!
Turbos lead 3-0!!!
...but the Turbos weren't done yet!! After having set up a goal earlier in the game, C. Henao was eager to get on the score sheet himself. Similar to D. Quishpi's goal just minutes earlier, this time after a save on a shot from O. Rico, C. Henao would steal a pass coming up the middle and make the opponents pay by shooting a ball high over the goal keeper's head in the 18th minute!!
Turbos lead 4-0!!!
That would cap the scoring for the first half as the Turbos took a 4-0 lead into halftime.
The second half was all about holding the fort down and playing team defense. G. Falcon would take the field in the second half as I. Nieves manned the goal. Just like the first half, the Turbos would bear down on defense and make sure their goalie had little work. I. Nieves only had to make 2 saves in the second half...while the midfield and forwards moved the ball around beautifully from back to front...and back again. They were in complete command of the game, and if not for a couple of shots going just wide, would have extended the lead even further.
There was no scoring in the second half from either team...and the Turbos would take their first game of the day by a final of 4-0!
Turbos win 4-0!!!
(DNP but with us in spirit: D. Lyons, R. Monteiro & I. Contreras)
Game 2: EYS Turbos vs. Pequannock Strikers
The Turbos would line up for the second game of the day just an hour later to face the tournament host Pequannock Strikers. Coming off a 4-0 win in their first game, the Turbos were riding high and ready from the start of the game.
The Turbos would pressure early and often in this one...and this time they would be rewarded early for their effort! In the 3rd minute of play, L. Henriques would recover a ball from the back and quickly play it up the left sideline to M. Shamy. He would beat his defender down the line and lay a pass across the middle to D. Zokner. With a defender on his back, D. Zokner would turn away from him, line the ball up on this right foot and bury the ball low into the corner of the net!!
Turbos lead 1-0!!!
Just 3 minutes later in the 6th minute, M. Shamy would tally a goal of his own. This time the play would build up from the right side as D. Quishpi sent a ball deep into the offensive zone from his right back position to I. Nieves. I. Nieves would take the ball deep into the corner and send a cross all the way across the goal to the left side where M. Shamy was waiting and would tap the ball into the back of the net for the Turbos second goal of the game!!
Turbos lead 2-0!!!
As if on a schedule...the Turbos would strike again just 3 minutes later. This time it was I. Nieves on a pass from N. Henriques out of the back. I. Nieves turned on the jets from midfield and ran into the penalty box with the ball...one on one with the Pequannock goalie. He took his time, settled the ball...and picked his spot placing the ball high and to the keeper's left into the back of the net!
Turbos lead 3-0!!!
The game would settle down for a little while as the opposing team dropped another defender into the back to slow the Turbos down. The game would remain scoreless for the next 8 minutes while the Turbos figured out how to beat the back line of 3 defenders. Eventually, the would find a way. After defending a corner kick, G. Falcon would jump on a loose ball and play the ball to D. Quishpi at right back. He would look upfield and play a long ball up the right sideline. O. Rico caught up to the ball and ran at her defender, making a quick move to the right and carrying the ball up the right sideline. From a deep angle, she would take a shot that carried all the way across the goal line and found the back of the net in the 17th minute!
Turbos lead 4-0!!!
3 minutes later...the Turbos got on the scoreboard again. After a play up the middle of the field, L. Henriques took a shot from his forward position, but it was blocked and bounced out to the right side. O. Rico was waiting near the end line and picked up the rebound. She made a quick spin move around her defender and again blasted a shot from a very tight angle...almost from the same position has her previous shot. Again, the ball would carry all the way across the goal line from right to left and find the back of the ne in the 20th minutet!!
Turbos lead 5-0!!!
The Turbos weren't done just yet. 7 minutes later...they did it again. This time, the goal would come from N. Osorto. After missing on a few chances earlier, N. Osorto was in perfect position as he would sneak behind the defense and get onto a perfect through ball off the foot of C. Henao. C. Henao shifted play from the right to the left, looked up and played the ball into space deep into the offensive zone. N. Osorto picked the ball up in stride and ripped a shot into the back of the net extending the lead to 6 in the 27th minute!!
Turbos lead 6-0!!!
The EYS Turbos would take the 6-0 lead into halftime feeling confident. Just like the first game, I. Nieves would relieve G. Falcon of goal keeping duties for the 2nd half.
In the second half, the Turbos would slow the pace of the game down and control the midfield and backline. With the game well under control, they took it upon themselves to not run up the score. They knew they could score one more goal with tournament rules allowing no more than a 7 goal differential for each game. IN the 34th minute, they would tally that final goal. G. Falcon, who is usually tending to goal, took the ball up the middle of the field and split two defenders. Feeling the defense bearing down on him, he blasted a shot from just inside the penalty box. The goalie dove and was able to get his hand on it, but the ball was still lose and M. Shamy didn't quit on the play. He ran in, scooped up the rebound as the goalie reached back for it and drilled it into the bottom of the net!!
Turbos lead 7-0 in the 34th minute!!
That would be all the scoring for the game as the Turbos would continue to work the ball around and play excellent defense to earn their second shutout of the day. There was a bit of scare towards the end of the game as D. Quishpi took a hard shot to the head when the opponents tried to clear a ball...but he would be alright. He wouldn't return to the game..but made sure to root and encourage his team on from the sideline as they closed out the game.
Turbos win 7-0!!!
(DNP but with us in spirit: D. Lyons, R. Monteiro & I. Contreras)
DAY 2
The Turbos would return on day 2 looking to pick up where they left off after day 1. Coming into play on day 2, the Turbos were tied for first place on points with Harrison (who they would play later in the day), but in 1st overall based on goal differential with a +11.
Game 3: EYS Turbos vs. Wayne Boys & Girls Panthers
Game 3 of the tournament had the Turbos matched up against the Wayne team who had lost both of their games on day 1. The Turbos were feeling confident coming into this one, but humble. They knew they would have to continue to work hard to continue to get results.
Unlike previous games, this one had more of a feeling out period as both teams jockeyed to take control of the game. The defense of N. Henriques, D. Lyons and D. Quishpi would again stand tall as they allowed the opponents nothing once they crossed midfield, keeping goalkeeper G. Falcon with little work to do early on. In the midfield, I. Nieves, O. Rico, C. Henao, D. Zokner, M. Shamy and N. Osorto would move the ball well from side to side and pinch in on the defensive side, while trying to spring L. Herniques free up front in the forward position. They would find him on a few occasions, but the opposing goalie was equal to the task.
The Turbos would eventually draw first blood in this one as I. Nieves read the defense well and stole a pass from the back and made the opponents pay with blistering shot in the back of the net in the 12th minute!!
Turbos lead 1-0!!!
With the scoring opened, the Turbos went right back on the attack. Just 5 minutes later, D. Zokner would put the Turbos up by two as he was on the receiving end of a high through ball pass from the back off the foot of D. Quishpi. D. Zokner would carry the ball with him, make a couple of moves on the rushing defenders and blast a shot off into the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 2-0!!!
2 minutes later...they did it again. This time, D. Quishpi who assisted on the previous goal was playing in the forward position. I. Nieves carried a ball from the back and made a quick stop, letting the defender blow past him. He looked up and found D. Quishpi alone in the middle of the field, with no one in front of him. I. Nieves sent the ball up to D. Quishpi, who ran in with the ball and ripped a shot off with only the goalie to beat...and he found the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 3-0!!!
With the first half coming to a close, the Turbos pushed hard for another goal. In the 23rd minute, they got it. N. Henriques was up front this time playing in the forward position. He took a shot that was blocked and the rebound found it's way to D. Zokner with just one defender between him and the goal. He pushed the ball off to his right to get around the defender and lined up his shot...right into the bottom of the net past a diving goalkeeper!
Turbos lead 4-0!!!
That would put a cap on the scoring for the first half as the Turbos took the 4-0 lead into halftime. Having had little do between the posts in the first half, G. Falcon would be relieved in the 2nd half by D. Lyons, who was eager to get back in goal after ending the previous season with a hand injury.
It wouldn't take long for the Turbos to find the back of the net in the second half. Picking up where they left off in the first half, the Turbos pushed down field and put on early pressure. The reward...an early penalty shot resulting from a G. Falcon shot that a defender stuck his arm out to block. The usual Turbo goalie now found himself on the opposite side of the ball and lined up to take his penalty kick. With both teams set behind the penalty box ready to run in after the shot...G. Falcon took a few steps back from the ball. He eyed the goalie down, and after a small trot up to the ball, ripped a shot low and to the keeper's right for the goal!!
Turbos lead 5-0 in the 31st minute!
One minute later...they would strike again. Having just converted a PK, G. Falcon was getting comfortable in his midfield position. He would steal the ball of the ensuing kick off and send a through ball up to C. Henao who was now playing the forward position. Cool and collected, C. Henao would take the feed from G. Falcon and find the back of the net in the 32nd minute to extend the Turbos lead with a shot high into the back of the net!
Turbos lead 6-0!!!
With the game well under control, the Turbos let off the gas a little as the opponents also dropped another defender. Content to keep the score where it as, the Turbos controlled the back line and midfield with some great combination passing, making sure everyone was involved in the play. In the 39th minute, the Turbos would score the final goal of the game. N. Osorto would steal a pass from the defense and walk in one on one and blast a shot high to the keeper's left to cap off the scoring!!
Turbos lead 7-0!!!
The Turbos would shut it down after that goal and hold off the opponents to secure their third win of the tournament, with out letting up any goals!!
Turbos win7-0!!!
(DNP but with us in spirit:R. Monteiro & I. Contreras)
Game 4: EYS Turbos vs. Harrison Futbol Benfica
The Turbos now headed into their final game of the tournament...undefeated. ..and they would face the only other undefeated team in the tournament, the Harrison Futbol Benfica squad. It was the showdown of undefeated teams. The Turbos knew that if they won this one, they would win their bracket with a perfect 4-0 record. They seemed undaunted by the task, and showed up ready to play, assuming nothing. They'd worked hard to get here...and they were determined to close it out!
The Harrison team also showed up ready to defend their 2-0 start. They pushed early and got in deep from the opening kick off, but the backline kept them out of the middle, forcing shots from the wings. G. Falcon was equal to the task making a couple of early saves from sideline shots. Now, settled in, the Turbos went on the attack.
In the 5th minute, I. Nieves would open the scoring as he and D. Zokner played one touch all the way up the right sideline. Eventually, D. Zokner would pull away and carry the defense with him to the middle of the field, opening up the right side for I. Nieves. Reading his midfielder perfectly, I. Nieves made a run past the defenders as D. Zokner split the backline with a pass. I. Nieves would catch up to the through ball and blast shot into the back of the goal!!
Turbos lead 1-0!!!
The Turbos were on the board...and feeling the flood gates were about to open. Riding the momentum of that first goal...it took just 1 minute to extend the lead. After a steal in the back by D. Lyons, the ball was quickly sent off to the right to I. Nieves. From midfield, he looked up and fed a pass up to the wide open L. Henriques, who picked up the pass at top speed and rushed in on net. With the defense closing in on him from behind, he ripped a low shot off from just inside the penalty box. The goalie got her hands on it, but it was just too powerful to handle as the force of the shot pushed the ball through her gloves!!
Turbos lead 2-0 in the 6th minute!!!
Having picked up his first of the tournament, L. Henriques was hungry for more. In the 8th minute, he would strike again!! This time, the feed would come from the opposite side as M. Shamy went up the left sideline and sent the ball to the middle to L. Henriques, who wasted no time to cut to his left an blast another shot past the goalie!!!
Turbos lead 3-0!!!
The Harrison team would settle down and regroup on defense. After a goalie change, the held the Turbos scoreless for the rest of the second half. Harrison would eventually get the first goal of the tournament past the Turbos late in the first half. In the 21st minute, a shot from the left went high and hit the hand of a Turbo defender. The referee had no choice but to award the penalty.
G. Falcon stood on his goal line, got some final instructions from the referee, and stared down his opponent. The Harrison team sent their goalkeeper up to take the penalty shot. He ran up..and shot the ball high and to G. Falcon's left. He guessed correctly and was in the right spot..but the ball was just too high over his outstretched hands and just out of reach.
Turbos lead 3-1.
On the next kick off..the Turbos almost pulled it right back as D. Lyons took the opening kick off right down the field and put a shot JUST wide of the goal post. It would have put the lead back at 3, but it just wasn't meant to be. The Turbos thought they'd regained the 3 goal lead just second later when N. Henriques jumped on a rebound and kicked the ball into the back of the net, but the goalie had his hand on the ball as N. Henrqiues kicked it, and the referee called the goal off stating the goalie had control.
The Turbos were in a close one..and the half would end with the Turbos lead 3-1.
After a quick break, the Turbos came out determined to take control of the game in the second half...and they would do so EARLY!!
Just 1 minute into the 2nd half, C. Henao would take a pass from O. Rico from deep in the right corner. As the ball came in, he took the ball on his right foot, turned and blasted a ball into the back of the net to increase the Turbo lead back to 3!!
Turbos lead 4-1!!!
One minute later, in the 32nd minute, the same duo would strike again. This time off a throw in from the right sideline. O. Rico found C. Henao would receive the throw in on one bounce and arch a shot HIGH over the goalie and into the back of the net from just outside the penalty area!!
Turbos lead 5-1!!!
After the quick flurry of goals, and a 4 goal lead, the Turbos would make a goalie change as D. Lyons was again itching to get back between the goal posts. He would relieve G. Falcon the rest of the way. He would be tested almost immediately as the Harrison team broke in down the left side, but picking up where he left off in the previous game, D. Lyons was equal to the task.
In the 39th minute, the Turbos would put the game away for good. I. Nieves and D. Quishpi would connect down the right side of the field. After getting past the left back, I. Nieves took his time...looked up into the middle of the field and put a perfect cross into D. Quishpi who was waiting to drive it home with a shot low to the keeper's right!!
Turbos lead 6-1!!!
The Turbos kept pushing however. After having to come off the field having suffered a minor injury earlier, N. Henriques was ready to come back in..this time to play forward. He found himself with a few opportunities in front, but the opposing goalie was able to make some great saves to keep the lead at 5.
In the 45th minute, hard work would pay off again as the Turbos netted their final goal of the tournament. N. Henriques was clogging up the defense from his forward position and would cause a turnover to the foot of G. Falcon. G. Falcon would pick up the loose ball and take a shot, but the goalie was able to get his hand on it...the rebound however was just laying there for N. Osorto who came rushing in from the left side to cap the scoring with a blast into the back of the net!
Turbos lead 7-1!!!
The Turbos were in lock down mode. There were 5 minutes left to play...and the undefeated weekend would be complete.
5....4...3...2......1........
GAME OVER!!
Turbos win 7-1!!!
(DNP but with us in spirit:R. Monteiro & I. Contreras)
It was a TERRIFIC weekend for the young EYS Turbos!!! With the victory against Harrison, they locked up first place in the tournament and would walk off with their first tournament 1st place finish!!!
Defense and teamwork was the theme of the weekend. The Turbos worked on their defense all week in practice, and it showed as they allowed just ONE GOAL all weekend, and that coming as a result of a penalty kick. The midfield work like a well oiled machine moving the ball from side to side until they found openings in the defense, and then sending the ball up to the forwards who made perfectly timed runs to get behind the defense. In between the posts, the goalies weren't tested often, but they were there and stood up to the test when they were!!
