It's been a busy couple of weekends for the EYS Turbos, with 3 games played over 9 days. They've faced off against some really tough teams, while battling injuries and short benches along the way, but in usual Turbo fashion, they've picked each other up along the way and shown what great teamwork is all about.
EDP Game #3: EYS Turbos (1-1-0) away at CenterCourt FC (0-0-0) (4/21/18)
The Turbos took to the road again in week 3 to face the CenterCourt FC squad in Gillette. Weather wasn't going to be a factor in this game, as the CetnerCourt squad hosted the game in an indoor turf facility that was state of the art. The field itself was much larger than what the Turbos are used to playing on, so they were going to be in for a long and tiring day.
To say this game got off to a fast start would be an understatement. Right from the opening whistle, the CenterCourt squad was in top gear and took it to the Turbos early...and often. Just 47 seconds into the game, they struck for their first goal as they finished off on some brilliant passing and put one into the net.
Turbos down 1-0 in the 1st minute.
Going down early in games is not something the Turbos aren't accustomed to at this point...and how they respond is starting to become a badge of honor as well. Not phased by going down early, the Turbos kept their chin up and continued to battle. The CenterCourt team was disciplined though, and didn't give much up. The defensive backbone of N. Henriques, D. Lyons, D. Quishpi and L. Henriques settled down in the back and consistently played terrific deep balls up the wings to O. Rico, I. Nieves, M. Shamy and N. Osorto, but the CenterCourt squad was able to cut them off most of the time. I. Contreras and J. Agudelo playing up front had to pinch back deep in the midfield to make sure the ball was moving upfield. In goal, G. Falcon had his work cut out for him too. The CenterCourt team was relentless early on putting shot after shot on goal...but G. Falcon was equal to the task after giving up the early goal on a brilliant passing play.
In the 19th minute, Turbo patience and discipline would equalize the game. After another save, G. Falcon decided to play the ball upfield to restart play and bounced a ball over the opposing midifeld on the left side to M. Shamy. After settling the ball down he sent a through ball down the line for C. Henao. C. Henao would cut back into his right and and start taking the ball across the top of the penalty box. With 2 players defending him, we quickly cut back to his left side and sent the defenders the wrong way. Finally having found some space, he spun around and let one rip with his left foot. The keeper was in position and dove to try to make the save, but the shot had too much pace on it and beat him into the bottom corner of the net!
Turbos tied 1-1 in the 19th minute!!!
With the game equalized, both teams settled down again and bunkered down on defense. It was a midfield and defensive battle for the rest of the half with both teams trying to get the ball deep to their forwards, but the backlines on both sides kept jumping every pass and sending it back the other way. Late in the 1st half, J. Agudelo caught a break and took a rush up the middle. When he felt the pressure he played the ball off to O. Rico on his right side who let a shot rip that went just wide of goal. Unfortunately for J. Agudelo, this would be his last action in this game as he was unable to continue due to a lingering injury in his foot from the previous week. He was upset, but continued to cheer his Turbos on from the bench with an icepack on his foot. L. Henriques would jump up to help out in the forward postiion. Just minutes after moving from defense to forward, he too found himself one on one going up the middle after a great pass from D. Lyons in the back. The speedy L. Henriques darted in on goal, when out of nowhere a midfielder rushed back and was able to catch him from behind just as he was letting a shot go. He deflected it wide.
It seemed as if though neither team would break the other's defense down again...but again, patience, determination and teamwork would put the Turbos on the board. After some back and forth in the midfield, D. Zokner would push up quickly into the path of a pass to intercept it and start a break the other way for the Turbos. After picking his head up, he saw I. Nieves rushing up the right wing. He laid a leading pass out in front of I. Nieves, who was going full speed and played the ball up into space for himself. He looked to his left and there he saw N. Osorto rushing in from his left wing position making a run for the far post. With a quick touch, he sent an aerial pass all the way across the field to the left side. N. Osorto took the pass on one hop and played it forward to himself to line up for a shot. After letting the ball take one bounce, he pulled his right leg back and blasted a shot high over the goal, off the crossbar in straight down into the net!!!
Turbos lead 2-1 in the 30th minute!!!
That would do it for the 1st half as the whistle would blow shortly after the Turbos took a 2-1 lead.
Playing with a lead, on a big field and a man down due to injury, the Turbos were tired. The halftime break came at a good time. They went back out for the second half, and continued to battle on. Again, the CenterCourt team came out flying. They tested the back four and G. Falcon. The defense did what they could to block shots. When they couldn't, G. Falcon was diving from side to side to punch shots away. In the 39th minute, the opponents finally wore the Turbos down and found the back of the net again to tie the game.
Turbos tied 2-2 in the 39th minute.
Still flying high from their previous goal, the CenterCourt pushed on and just minutes later got another one to take the lead once again.
Turbos down 3-2 in the 44th minute.
With the minutes ticking off the clock, the Turbos got their second wind and seemed to find another gear. With 5 minutes left to play and down by 1, they went to just 1 defender in the back, and 2 forwards. With nothing to lose, they pushed hard for the tie. In the 57th minute, they would get it. After taking shifting play to the offensive side of the field, the Turbos sent shot after shot on goal. It seemed like there was an invisible wall in front of the opponent goal at times, as nothing was going in. After a throw in from the right sideline, D. Quishpi sent a pass across to his left where out of nowhere, I. Contreras sprinted up and got his foot on the ball. After a quick move to get between to defenders, he sent a low shot on goal and just past the keeper and inside the post to tie the game!!
Turbos tied 3-3 in the 57th minute!!!
If 1 was good..surely 2 would be better. Having just tied the game, the Turbos were running on pure adrenaline at this point..and they went right back to work from the kick off. Again, they jumped all over the midfield and forced another turnover. With time running out, again the Turbos threw everything at the net. They weren't satisfied with the tie...they wanted the win. Off a throw in with 1 minute left to play, D. Quishpi sent a bomb towards the net from the midfield. The ball made it to goal and was saved, but the rebound bounced around and found it's way to the foot of I. Contreras. With no time to do anything but react, he reached out with his right foot and sent the ball under the keeper from just a few yards out and into the net!!
Turbos lead 4-3 in the 59th minute!!!
There was still time on the clock..this one wasn't over yet. The Turbos still had work to do as the CenterCourt team put the opening kickoff deep into the Turbo end to earn one last corner kick. They had been running set plays from the corner kicks all day, but they were out of tricks at this point as the Turbos had figured them all out. They sent a ball into the penalty box that G. Falcon rushed out to punch away, and the defense cleared the ball up the field....FINAL WHISTLE!!
TURBOS WIN 4-3!!!!
It was a hard fought game against one of the toughest opponents the Turbos had faced. The Turbos went down twice in this game and both times battled back to tie, and eventually walk away with the victory! It was a true showing of what teamwork, hard work and determination can accomplish!! Way to go Turbos!!!

EDP Game #4: EYS Turbos (2-1-0) away at Cedar Stars Newark (1-0-2) (4/28/18)
Fresh off a hard fought and well deserved victory the previous week, the Turbos were on the road again for the final time this season. They would face off against the Cedar Stars Newark team at the St. Benedict's Prep fields in Newark. The Turbos have had mixed results against Cedar stars teams, but held the edge coming into this one having one 3 of 5 games against the Academy. This was the first time they would face the Newark team, but that didn't mean the teams didn't know each other. Some of the Cedar Stars players go to school with some of the Turbos, so it was a bit of a reunion during warm ups as the kids met up at midfield to greet each other.
All pleasantries exchanged and aside, it was now time to kick off. The weather was warm...and the Turbos engines were ready to go. The Turbos would be short a couple of players for this game as L. Henriques was sick, and D. Zokner was out with an injury. Back and trying to give it a go this week after an injury of his own was J. Agudelo. The Turbos would have a short bench...but the Turbos know it's a team game and everyone would need to step up.
The Turbos were in control of most of the play early on. The defensive backline of D. Quishpi, N. Henriques, I. Nieves and D. Lyons gave the Cedar Stars team nothing. They kept everything away from goal, and G. Falcon made easy work of anything that came his way. In the midfield, O. Rico, C. Henao, N. Osorto and M. Shamy moved the ball around with ease as they had the Cedar Stars midfielders running all over the field trying to keep up them. Up front, I. Contreras and J. Agudelo continued their normal routine of giving defenders fits with stealthy runs behind the backline.
In the 16th minute the Turbos would open the scoring off some great build up from the back led to a corner kick. D. Lyons played a ball from his left side to the right for O. Rico. She chased it down and tried to send one towards goal, but it was deflected out for a corner kick. On the corner kick, D. Quishpi snuck up from his defensive position and received the corner pass and sent it toward the goal. The ball sent through a few players, and eventually found it's way onto the foot of C. Henao near the left post who redirected it into the net!!
Turbos lead 1-0 in the 16th minute!!!
The Turbos would keep the pressure on. Short a couple of players...N. Henriques stepped into the midfield from his defensive position. After a cross from the left side by N. Osorto into the box, N. Henriques was able to take control of the ball and let of 3 shots on goal. Two were just kept out of the net by defenders, and the last one went into the keeper's hands. The Turbos were pushing hard...but ball just wasn't going in to extend the lead.
Coming back the other way, the Cedar Stars team would earn a direct kick on goal. G. Falcon would set his wall up, and his positioning of the wall couldn't be better as the kick was high, but straight into the center of the wall to prevent a shot on goal. Shortly after, the half would come to an end.
The half would end with the Turbos up 1-0!!
The second half was very similar to the first. Again the Turbos pushed hard to extend the lead. D. Lyons took hold in the midfield for a stint during this game as well and at one point found M. Shamy rushing in off the left side. M. Shamy went in on goal, and feeling the pressure from behind let a shot go that went just wide of goal. Score still tied at 1.
In the 41st minute, the Cedar Stars team would strike. After a long ball from their defense got over the backline, the Cedar forwards was in one on one against G. Falcon. It was a footrace to the ball. G. Falcon jumped off his line to try to get to the ball first, but was unlucky. The Cedar Stars forward go there first and sent a shot towards goal that found the back of the net.
Turbos tied 1-1 in the 41st minute.
Shortly after tieing the game, the Cedar Stars team pressed again and caused a scramble in the box that G. Falcon rushed up for to jump on a loose ball, while taking a kick to his side. He would be OK and battle on.
The Turbos would get momentum back and start turning the tide in their favor again. In the 49th minute, after breaking through the midfield after some nice passing between C. Henao and I. Contreras, C. Henao was rushing in off the left side. A Cedar Stars midfielder would charge in from behind to stop the break and take a foul. The ball was spotted about 18 yards from goal near the right sideline. The Turbos lined the penalty box and awaited the refs whistle to signal that the direct kick could be taken. C. Henao lined up to take his well earned kick. He started his run to the ball and put a spectacular shot over the wall and to the right of the keeper...placing the shot into the left side of the net. The shot was unstoppable, and it gave the Turbos a 2-1 lead with just 11 minutes left to play!
Turbos lead 2-1 in the 49th minute!!!
The Turbos kept looking for more. O. Rico, M. Shamy, I. Nieves, N. Osorto, I. Contreras and J. Agudelo kept taking the ball deep and earning corner kicks late. D. Lyons, D. Quiship and N. Henriques kept sneaking up on the corners to send balls towards the goal, but just couldn't find the back of the net. G. Falcon was playing like a 3rd defender and rushed out of net to thwart off counter attacks when defenders were caught deep...and C. Henao continued to navigate the midfield trying to set up his wingers and forwards. In the 57th minute...the hard work paid off to put an exclamation point on the game and seal the victory. After holding the play up on the right to wait for support, I. Nieves sent a pass across the middle to C. Henao. He would find J. Agudelo in the middle near the top of the penalty box. With a defender on his back, J. Agudelo spun and took the ball to his left side and found himself one on one with the goalie. He would make no mistake and slide one past him and into the net for the Turbos' 3rd goal of the game!
Turbos lead 3-1 in the 57th minute!!!
That would be it on the day as the final whistle blew just 3 minute later, and the Turbos would walk off victorious, raising their season record to 3-1-0!!

EDP Game #5: EYS Turbos (3-1-0) away at Summit SC Barcelona (3-0-0) (4/29/18)
The Turbos would be at it again on Sunday. After taking another one on the road the previous day from Cedar Stars...the Turbos would finally play their first official home league game of the Spring EDP Season on a brisk Sunday afternoon at Kenah Field. The game would be no easy task at the Turbos would face an undefeated squad in Summit SC Barcelona, who were also the highest scoring team in the league.
Still facing injury woes, the Turbos would be short benched again as D. Zokner was still unable to play. Goalie G. Falcon would also have to miss this game due to a prior commitment that could not be moved. Every Turbo would have to take on some extra responsibilities on this day.
In goal, I. Nieves would make the start in place of G. Falcon. On defense, L. Henriques, N. Henriques, D. Quishpi and D. Lyons would look to hold off the high scoring Summit team. In the midfield, M. Shamy, N. Osorto, C. Henao and O. Rico would try to control play...and at forward, I. Contreras and J. Agudelo would try to find the back of the net.
The Summit team was big. Almost every player seemed to tower over the Turbos...but the Turbos didn't seem bothered. The game started, and unlike previous games, the Turbos were not on the back foot early. They took the play to the Summit squad hard. In the first 10 minutes of play, the Turbos sent shot after shot on goal. Hitting the post a couple of times, and when the shots were on goal, some unbelievable saves by the Summit goalie was the only thing able to keep the Turbos off the board. In what felt like a game where the Turbos were leading 4-0...the score was still tied at zero.
In the 15th minute, the visiting team found it's way onto the scoreboard first. After some clinical passing up the left sideline, they were able to spring their left wing and he ripped off a shot that snuck just inside the near post and past I. Nieves. It was a hard low shot that he was able to get his hand on, but not out of the net.
Turbos down 1-0 in the 15th minute.
Play would go back and forth in the midfield the rest of the way as the Turbos defense locked down the back and gave the opponents almost nothing for the rest of the half. In the 20th minute, N. Henriques was again helping out in the midfield and found himself in front of goal with a couple of good chances off of feeds from C. Henao and D. Lyons, but the Summit goalkeeper was on his game and kept the ball out of the net. In the 26th minute, the Turbos earned a free kick from just past the midfield line. D. Quishpi lined it up and went on goal with the kick...the ball rang the post to the left of the keeper and stayed out. The Turbos were doing everything right...the ball just wasn't going in. They kept at it, and in the 30th minute just before the halftime whistle, they earned an indirect kick from about 18 yards out. I. Contreras would line up to try to put one on goal. D. Quishpi ran over from his defensive position to roll the ball forward as I. Contreras ran up to it and sent a line drive shot on goal. It was headed towards the right side of the goal, and the keeper got there and was able to get his hands on it, but the ball had too much pace on it and went through his hands and into the goal!
Turbos tied 1-1 in the 30th minute!!!
The whistle would blow almost immediately after sending the game to halftime tied at 1.
The Turbos were dominating possession, pace of the game and offensive opportunities. They were doing all the right things...they just had to keep at it and be patient for their hard work to pay off.
They came out in the second half determined to make their chances pay off. In the 38th minute of play, they had a bit of a scare as the Summit team earned a free kick about 16 yards from goal, just outside the penalty box. I. Nieves set up his wall and stood ready in goal for the shot. It came, over the wall, but I. Nieves was able to get back to his right side and pull the shot down as it was headed for the top of the goal. The scare must have woke the Turbos up, because on the ensuing charge, they decided enough was enough and went up the field determined to take the lead. I. Nieves played the ball to N. Henriques playing left back after making the save. N. Henriques took possession of the ball, and with a forward bearing down on him, made a quick move to his left to leave the attacking forward in the wind, and played the ball up the middle to C. Henao. C. Henao sent a one touch pass up the left sideline to a sprinting N. Osorto who took the ball in stride, and sent a ball into the middle to I. Contreras. I. Contreras wasted no time and let go of a quick shot on goal from just outside the penalty box to beat the keeper and give the Turbos the lead!
Turbos lead 2-1 in the 39th minute!!!
It didn't take long for the Turbos to extend that lead. Just 2 minutes later, hard work paid off again. Building from the back again, D. Lyons sent the ball up the right side to M. Shamy. With defenders hounding him for the ball, he was able to battle through a couple of tackles and move the ball up field and send a ball into the center where I. Contreras was waiting again. His initial shot was blocked, but he stayed with it, picked up his own rebound and ripped one into the back of the net for his 3rd goal of the day!
Turbos lead 3-1 in the 41st minute!!!
With the Summit team on their heals, the Turbos could sense that the tide was finally going their way. In the 45th minute, N. Osorto stole a ball on the left side and quickly sent it off to C. Henao in the middle of the field. He looked up and saw the right side wide open with O. Rico making a run for the net. He sent a leading pass up the field. O. Rico was able to catch up to it and tee up a shot, but it went just wide. Right from the resuming goal kick, again the Turbos jumped on a loose ball. This time it was J. Agudelo who juked a defender near the left corner and sent a ball across the goal. N. Osorto came darting in and just missed on plucking the ball out of the air and putting into the back of the wide open net. The Turbos were on fire. Just minutes later, their hard work paid off. In the 51st minute, the Turbos rushed in and attacked the Summit defense following a goal kick to the left. The Summit defender felt the pressure coming on from N. Osorto. He looked up and had no where to pass as D. Lyons was blocking the passing lane for his outlet pass. Under pressure, he sent a ball across the goal, where J. Agudelo jumped on the opportunity and intercepted a pass headed to the right back. He took a few steps in with the ball to set himself and blasted a shot into the back of the net past a diving keeper!
Turbos lead 4-1 in the 51st minute!!!
With the game winding down, the Turbos kept pushing for more. In their chase for a 5th goal, they got caught up field on long ball from the Summit defense. 2 Summit forwards went in one on one against I. Nieves. He was caught in between rushing out to meet the ball, or playing the pass. The Summit player had the option to pass or shoot...he chose to shoot and put one in the back of the net.
Turbos lead 4-2 in the 56th minute.
Just a few minutes left to play. The Turbos made some last minute substitutions to get some fresh and more defensive legs on the field to try to close out the game. The Summit team earned a corner kick with just seconds left to play. D. Quishpi was able to cut off the corner kick and sent the ball up field where L. Henriques was now positioned at forward. He was running top speed to catch up to the ball and would have been one on one with the Summit keeper to try to get one more before the game ended, but the ref blue the whistle as soon as he crossed the midfield line. GAME OVER!! Turbos win!!
Turbos win 4-2!!!
It was another hard fought game. Shorthanded and with players having to step up and play different positions than they are used to, but the Turbos didn't skip a beat. It was another overall team effort to get the win and climb to the top of the table with a 4-1-0 record and 13 points!
