EDP Game #6: EYS Turbos (4-1-0) vs. Sayreville SA Bombers (1-0-3) (5/6/18)
The EYS Turbos faced off against a familiar foe on Sunday, 5/6/18. They matched up against the Sayreville SA Bombers who they'd played twice before in two different tournaments. The first game was in Sayreville for a Father's Day tournament, that saw the Turbos fall 4-3 on a controversial call late in the game. The next time the teams faced each other, the Turbos would get the better of the Sayreville team in the Piscataway Fall Classic by the score of 6-5. This would be the first time the Turbos would face the Sayreville squad at home.
The Sayreville squad as coming off their first win of the season the previous week, and they were looking to build on their momentum. They did just that early in this game. Catching the Turbos a bit flat footed early on, the visiting squad took an early 2 goal lead just 3 minutes into the game. Bad bounces and defensive breakdowns, uncharacteristic for the Turbos, lead to the early hole.
Turbos down 2-0 in the 3rd minute.
The Turbos were done, but not out. Just 2 minutes later, they would pull one back when pressure from O. Rico and C. Henao would force a turnover in the midfield that would bounce to the foot of D. Quishpi. From just past the midfield line, D. Quishipi would tee up a high arching shot towards goal that went well over the keepers hands an into the net for a goal!
Turbos down 2-1 in the 5th minute.
The Turbos were back in the game...but the visiting team was determined to push them back out of it. They seemed to be on the path to do that as they would tally two more goals in the 12th and 16th minutes...putting the Turbos down by 3!
Turbos down 4-1 in the 16th minute.
The EYS Turbos needed to settle down and take back control of the game. In goal, G. Falcon took a deep breath and re-established communication with the backline. D. Quishpi, L. Henriques, N. Henriques and D. Lyons on defense tightened up in the back and made sure the back would be solidified. In the middle, M. Shamy and N. Osorto on the left, D. Zokner and C. Henao up the middle, and O. Rico and I. Nieves on the right took back control of the midfield. Meanwhile, I. Contreras and J. Agudelo pulled back a little deeper from their forward position to make sure chances were limited the rest of the way.
The game would kick back off after the goal in the 16th minute...and the Turbos seemed to wake up. Enough was enough. The players on the bench yelled as loud as they could to cheer those on the field on...and the Turbo energy started making it's way back into the game. In the 20th minute, the Turbos made their first dent in the score deficit. D. Lyons played a ball from the back to the left for N. Osorto. He would take the ball up the sideline, and when his path was cut off, he sent a ball to the middle to C. Henao. C. Henao would take on a couple of defenders and as soon as he found an opening, he let a shot rip from just outside the penalty box. He placed it to the right of the keeper and into the back of the net!!
Turbos down 4-2 in the 20th minute.
The game would stay tied for the next few minutes, but the Turbos were pushing hard. I. Nieves and O. Rico had chances from the right side, but their shots either went just wide, or were pulled off the goal line by the Sayreville defenders. D. Zokner also had a great chance on net after a steal up the middle, but the ball rolled just wide of the diving keeper and the goal post. The Turbos were knocking on the door for the next goal..it just wasn't coming. Finally in the 28th minute..they were able to crack through. N. Henriques pushed up from his defensive position and sent a great ball across the middle to I. Contreras at the top of the box. After taking in the the pass, he made a move to the outside of the charging defender a slid a shot low and to the keeper's right, just inside the goal post!
Turbos down 4-3 in the 28th minute.
The Turbos were starting to pick up momentum. Off the resuming kick off, they were right back at it and putting pressure on the visitors. The pressure was too much for the Sayreville team to handle, and in the 30th minute, just before the final whistle blew, the Turbos pulled another one back. D. Zokner, I. Nieves and M. Shamy in the midfield closed up all of the passing lanes on a restart and the visiting defense had no where to pass and break out of their zone. They sent a ball up the middle that I. Contreras intercepted and wasted not time in tallying his second of the game just before the whistle blew with a hard low shot past the keeper!
Turbos tied 4-4 in the 30th minute!!
The half would end with the game tied at 4...after a terrific comeback by the Turbos after being 3 goals down early.
Having spent most of the 1st half playing catch up..the Turbos were gassed. Everyone on the sideline was breathing heavy, so the break came at a perfect time. Maybe still feeling some of the effects of the late rush, the Turbos went back for the second half and gave up an early goal in the 33rd minute to go back down one.
Turbos down 5-4 in the 33rd minute.
But in true Turbo fashion...they weren't going to lay down. After a diving stop by G. Falcon to keep the score at 5-4, he would restart the play with a pass to D. Lyons at right back. D. Lyons would sidestep a charging defender and find D. Zokner in the middle of the field. Feeling pressure from behind him, D. Zokner sent a one time pass to I. Nieves on the right who pushed the ball up the right sideline. I. Nieves would send a cross into the middle of the penalty box. L. Henriques was waiting for it in the middle, and after a few frustrating games of ringing shots off the posts, L. Henriques made no mistake on this one. He pulled the ball out of the air and one timed a shot off the cross and into the back of the net!!
Turbos tied 5-5 in the 35th minute!!
The spectacular team play and finish seemed to be all the Turbos needed to remind them of what Turbo soccer is all about. The tightened up everywhere on the field and controlled the backline and midfield the rest of the way. The next 15 minutes would remain scoreless as the Turbos all helped pinch in on defense, and G. Falcon played as a 3rd defender rushing off his goal line and kicking attacking through balls out of play. With 9 minutes left to play, the Turbos made their final substitutions of the game hoping to have fresh legs on the field to wear down the Sayreville team.
In the 51st minute, the Turbos would take their first lead of the game. M. Shamy would battle for a lose ball on the left sideline, and with no where to go in front of him, he played the ball back to D. Quishpi. D. Quishpi ran up to the pass and looked up and found C. Henao making a break for goal. He sent a long pass up the field onto the feet of C. Henao. With one player to beat, C. Henao looked up and saw the goalie was playing a little up from his line. Wasting now time, he chose not to take the ball up field and sent a shot high over the pushed up keeper and into the back of the net!
Turbos lead 6-5 in the 51st minute!!!
One minute later...the Turbos would strike again! This time it was I. Contreras to complete the hat trick. After another turnover at midfield, N. Osorto took the ball up the left sideline and saw I. Contreras wide open in the middle of the field, with no one to beat. He lay a quick through ball ahead of I. Contreras would ran onto it and finessed a shot low, past the keeper into a wide open net!!
Turbos lead 7-5!!!
With just 1 minute left to play, the Sayreville team wasn't laying down just yet, and they pulled one back off a corner kick in the 59th minute.
Turbos lead 7-6 in the 59th minute.
All that was left was the final whistle...but that would be delayed by extra time. The referee added 2 minutes to the end of the game. The Sayreville team was hungry for the tie and pushed up hard. The Turbos had to stay tight and try to hold on for the win. As they Turbos bunkered into their defensive zone, N. Henriques took control of a ball in the back and sent it up the left sideline to N. Osorto. With the Sayreville team all pushed up trying to get the draw, the Turbos broke out 4 against 1. N. Osorto took the ball quickly up the left sideline and started moving in towards the lone defender. The defender had no choice but to push up and pressure N. Osorto..and as he stepped in his direction, N. Osorto released a pass to J. Agudelo waiting in the middle. J. Agudelo was 1v1 against the goalkeeper, and felt pressure coming from behind. In true unselfish Turbo fashion, he looked up and saw I. Nieves coming in from the right side. Taking no chances, he slid the ball to his right where I. Nieves rushed in and sent a blistering shot into the back of a wide open net!!
Turbos lead 8-6 in the 60th minute!!!
That goal was the exclamation point on a great come from behind victory as the final whistle would blow on the ensuing restart.
TURBOS WIN!!!
It wasn't the Turbos best game of the season...but in true Turbo fashion, they rallied behind each other, picked each other up and battled back for a hard fought victory. The Turbos proved to themselves that even when they're not at their best...teamwork and belief in each other can overcome any obstacle!

EDP Game #7: EYS Turbos (5-1-0) vs. NJ Stallions Academy (2-0-3) (5/13/18)
The EYS Turbos would be back at it on Sunday, 5/13/18. Not only was it Turbos game day...the game landed on Mother's Day. The Turbos went out determined to put on a good showing for their Mom's....
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!
It was a cold and dreary day at kick off. The temperature was in the low 50's...and it was starting to drizzle as the Turbos took the field for warm ups. By kick off time, there was a steady rain coming down...but the Turbos weren't going to let the weather put a damper on the day. The Turbos were however dealt a blow coming into this game as the injury bug would hit the team again this season. J. Agudelo was hurt earlier in the week and needed stitches to his left foot and would be unavailable for the game. He came out to cheer his Turbos on...and the Turbos were delighted to see him on the sideline.
Warmups over...Game Time!
The game got off to a quick pace with both teams putting pressure on each other early. G. Falcon would take his usual spot in goal. On defense, L. Henriques, N. Henriques, D. Quishpi and D. Lyons manned the backline. N. Osorto, M. Shamy, D. Zokner, C. Henao, O. Rico and I. Nieves patrolled the midfield, while I. Contreras played up front, with help from L. Henriques.
The Stallions had the first chances of the game in the 5th minute of play as they were able to get pressure up the middle. The defense close in on them, but they were able to get a quick shot off from just outside the penalty box. The shot seemed destined for the back of the goal, but G. Falcon rushed up from his line and made a terrific diving stop to his right. The save was made, but the shot had such force on it that it gave off a big rebound. The Stallions forward took control of the bouncing rebound and popped a quick shot on goal that D. Quiship was able to get in front of and deflect off to the side...it seemed headed just inside the goal post, before a sprawling L. Henriques reached out and cleared it from the goal line. Close call.
Minutes later, the Stallions would rush up the right sideline again, and the Turbos would be dealt another temporary blow as L. Henriques blocked a hard shot on goal and was forced to come out of the game for a bit.
The Turbos dodged one...and then decided it was time to get a chance of their own. In the 9th minute, they would push upfield and force a turnover. M. Shamy would make the steal along the left sideline and pull the ball back across the middle. He sent a swift pass across the top of the penalty box where I. Contreras, who was celebrating his birthday on game day, was waiting for it and quickly turned towards goal and let a shot go. It was a perfectly placed shot to the right of the keeper and into the back of the net! A GOAL FOR THE BIRTHDAY BOY!
Turbos lead 1-0 in the 9th minute!!!
Minutes later, the Turbos would be tested again as the Stallions team was relentless. They pushed hard to get the equalizer, and almost pulled one back. The ball came up the left sideline toward the Turbos goal. With N. Henriques closing in on the midfielder, he sent a pass to the middle where the Stallions forward let off a quick shot on goal. G. Falcon was diving that way to make the save, but it never made it to him as D. Quishpi jumped in front of the shot and blocked it, starting a rush the other way. N. Henriques picked up the loose ball and sent it upfield. D. Zokner received the pass from N. Henriques and sent I. Nieves up field down the right sideline. He sent a ball all the way across the field to M. Shamy who went deep into the corner before sending a centering pass to L. Henriques was now at forward after having recovered from his earlier injury. L. Henriques sent a shot on goal that just brushed off the post to the left of the keeper! The curse of the goal post was haunting the Turbos again!
In the 21st minute, the Turbos were pushing hard for a second goal. Having just missed out minutes earlier..they were determined to put another one on the scoreboard. O. Rico ran up field on a goal kick restart and applied pressure to the Stallions right back. He would send a ball deep into the Turbos side of the field trying to catch the defense flat. It was going to happen as D. Lyons stepped up to cut off the pass and quickly turn play around in the other direction. He sent a ball up the left sideline for N. Osorto who was racing down the sideline. The Stallions defender did all he could to catch up and put the ball out of play. On the restart, N. Osorto lined up for his throw-in and sent a long throw to the middle of the field for C. Henao. He would control the bouncing throw in, sneak past one defender, take a step in towards goal and let a shot go that beat the keeper and found the back of the net!!!
Turbos lead 2-0 in the 21st minute!!!
....unfortunately, that would be all the game play that would be had on the day. As the teams lined up for the restart after the goal, the Stallions coach was began to argue with the referee. After several warnings, things started getting out of hand and the ref was left with no choice but to send off the Stallions coach and call the game. Both teams pleaded with the ref to let the game continue, but it wasn't to be. The game was called with the Turbos leading by the score of 2-0. It wasn't they way they wanted the day to end, but the game was over.
Turbos win 2-0 after the game was suspended in the 21st minute.
