...and the Spring soccer season has begun!!!
The EYS Turbos kicked of the Spring EDP season on Sunday with a Crossover Game before diving into the EDP Schedule. The Turbos would be on the road for game 1 as they traveled south to face Holmdel FC Bayern.
The game was choppy on both sides to start as both teams took a little while adjusting to being back outdoors and on grass. The Turbos had some chances early as N. Osorto would find some room in the offensive third early on, but the Holmdel defense did a good job of getting in front and blocking his shots. The Turbos had a lot of early pressure, but it was the Holmdel team that would score first. They would find the back of the net twice with 2 back to back goals to take the lead.
But the Turbos would settle down and come roaring back. After some good defensive pressure on the ball, the combination of D. Quishpi and N. Henriques would play the ball out of the back an up the middle to a running L. Henriques. L. Henriques would turn on the speed and rush up the middle with the ball and send a blistering shot into the back of the Holmdel net. The Turbos were on the board. 2-1 Holmdel
It wouldn't take long to get the game back even. It took just 1 minute. As soon as Holmdel took the kick off after conceding the 1st goal, the Turbos would give them no breathing room and rushed the ball immediately. L. Henriques would make steal a play the ball into the right corner. I. Nieves sent the ball back into the middle from the right, where it would be picked up on the left side by a charging M. Shamy who took no time in putting the ball in the back of the Holdmel net!! Tied Game!! 2-2
The Turbos were hungry..and looking for more...and more they'd get. Just 3 minutes later...they would take the lead. D. Zokner would play a ball up the middle to charging M. Olavarria would would make his way to the top of the penalty box and let a shot go. The Holmdel goalie as equal to the task. As the home team tried to clear the ball, R. Monteiro would keep the ball in and get the ball back to M. Olavarria again who this time would find M. Shamy on the left side again with a wide open net. Again, he made no mistake as he buried his 2nd of the game in the back of the net to give the Turbos a 3-2 lead!!!
As the half was coming to a close, the Turbos kept the pressure on, and again, the hard work would pay off. C. Henao would take the ball deep into the Holmdel zone, and after a flurry of action near the goal line, the Turbos would earn a corner kick. With seconds to play before the halftime whistle, I. Nieves lined up to take the corner kick. He would play the ball into the box where a Holmdel defender would block it and send it right back to him...as he picked up the loose ball and played it back into the box, the Holmdel defender threw his arm up and blocked the cross, giving the Turbos their first PK of the Spring season. I. Nieves would put the ball on the penalty spot, take a few steps back..and bury the 4th Turbo goal of the game into the back of the Holmdel net!! Turbos lead 4-2...and that's how the half would end.
The 2nd half saw a lot of back and forth from both teams early on. G. Falcon would make some big saves in the early going of the 2nd half to keep the Turbos in the lead, but eventually the home team would pull one back with about 15 minutes left to play in the game. The Turbos didn't seem phased though. D. Lyons and D. Zokner would lock down the defensive third and played some great balls out of the back to O. Rico and N. Osorto, but they just couldn't connect to get the 2 goal lead back. Then with just minutes left to play, a questionable call would give the Holdmel team a PK. G. Falcon guessed correctly on where the kick would go, but it was just out of his reach. The home team pulled back another one and the game was tied at 4.
The Turbos would have a few more chances with just a minute left to play as the ball would skip across the 6 yard back and just wide of the post a few times, but they just couldn't find the back of the net as the final whistle blew.
The EYS Turbos played a great game!! Going down 2 early on the road isn't an easy thing to come back from, but the Turbos weren't phased and stormed back to earn a result on the road!! There isn't much more you could ask for....they played with heart and determination, and NEVER gave up. A terrific effort Turbos!!!
