EYS TURBOS deliver on Mother’s Day!!!
After a one week layoff from league play, the EYS Turbos took to the pitch again on Sunday to face the visiting BSM Elite squad on Mother’s Day. The weather at game time was a bit chilly, with some rain coming down, but it quickly turned into a warm Sunday afternoon.
The Turbos (3-0) were looking to keep their 3 game winning streak going against the BSM Elite squad who were 1-1-2 coming in. The start of the game was delayed for 15 minutes as the visiting team was waiting for their Coach to arrive, but the game eventually got under way just as the rain started to taper off.
The EYS Turbos came out flying from the start and applied constant pressure early on as the midfield of C. Henao, I. Nieves and I. Contreras fed a steady stream of passes up to forward L. Henriques who peppered the net early and often. If not for some terrific goalkeeping from the visiting team, the Turbos would have been up very early into the game. On the other end of the field, the defensive duo of D. Quishpi and N. Henriques made sure that nothing was coming up the middle to pose a serious threat to goalkeeper G. Falcon. They steadied play in the back and made sure everything stayed to the outside. The few chances the opponents did have early were easily handled by a confident G. Falcon in goal.
At just about the midpoint of the first half, the Turbos threw some fresh legs into the game after the day's starters had done their best to wear down the opponents…and the results game fast and often. After some back and forth play between both teams in the midfield, D. Zokner emerged with the ball and started to make his way up the field towards the goal. Flanked on the right by N. Osorto and M. Shamy on the left, the Turbos moved up together and were 3 on 2 against the BSM Elite defenders. Not knowing which way to turn, the defenders chose to cover the wings, and D. Zokner wasted no time in taking the opening up the middle and finessing the ball in to the back of the goal!! Turbos leads 1-0!!! (18th minute)
The Turbos were feeling it..and they weren’t about to take their foot off the gas. Just 4 minutes later in the 22nd minute, they struck again!! From a goal kick, G. Falcon played the ball up the right side to D. Quishpi. Like clockwork, as he’s done so many times in the past, D. Quishpi played the ball into space to the speedy N. Osorto up the right sideline. He would take the ball deep into the opponent zone and play a ball across into D. Zokner who would take a shot that would deflect to a waiting M. Shamy on the left. With nothing but goal in front of him, M. Shamy blasted the ball into the back of the net!! Turbos lead 2-0!!!!
…they weren’t done yet
Just 3 minutes later, the Turbos would strike again in the 25th minute. This time, off a goal kick, I. Nieves would dart in from the right side and steal a pass from the opponents left back. He would make a quick move to the inside and slam the ball into the back of the BSM Elite goal!! Turbos lead 3-0!!!!
The first half would end with the Turbos up 3-0 on the scoreboard…and they were ALL SMILES coming to the sideline! They were dominating the game, and they knew it!
The BMS Elite squad was determined to make this a game however. Just as the second half started, a combination of a fortunate bounce, and the Turbos maybe being a little flat footed resulted in a BSM Elite goal. After a battle for the ball in the midfield, the ball bounced to the BSM Elite forward who got behind the defense and manage to stay onside. He would put one over goalkeeper G. Falcons head and just out of his outstretched hands. Turbos leads cut to 3-1. (31st minute)
The Turbos didn’t seem to be shaken by the early goal. They came right back and had some terrific early chances to build on the lead, but just couldn’t connect. M. Olavarria and I. Contreras connect a couple of times to lead 2 on 1’s done the field against BSM Elite, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. Likewise, L. Henriques had a few chances early in the 2nd half, but his shots went just wide of the goal. L. Henriques’ day would be cut short just minutes later as he was hit in the knee chasing a ball into the opponents zone and was unable to continue. His day would be over, but not before he tormented the defensive backline with his speed. Luckily, the injury wasn’t too serious.
R. Monteiro would come in for the injured L. Henriques, and the Turbos were determined to make the opponents pay. After a throw in on the right sideline, R. Monteiro would steal the ball from the BSM Elite midfielder and play it into the middle where C. Henao was waiting. C. Henao wasted no time and jumped on the bouncing ball and blasted a moon shot from just inside the midfield line…the ball seemed to be in the air forever…and it came down…INSIDE the opponents goal! Turbos lead 4-1!!!
The goal seemed to wake the BSM Elite team up momentarily, as they continued to try to bring the play up the middle, but N. Henriques would have none of that. With D. Quishpi pinching up to help on the attacking end from time to time, N. Henriques found himself the lone man back a few times…but that didn’t concern him. Every time the opponent tried to play a through ball up to the forward, up came THE WALL to punt the ball right back to the opposite end of the field. And when they came in with more than one attacker, he would take one one…and G. Falcon would come running out of goal to punt the ball right back to the other end of the field. AND..when they tried to come up the opposite side, D. Quishpi would send the attackers spinning as he turned them inside out with some fancy footwork along the sidelines before passing the ball up to his midfield. DEFENSIVE LOCK DOWN IN FULL EFFECT!!!
But...the Turbos offense wasn’t done. They wanted more. With just under 10 minutes left to play, the EYS Turbos built from the back and pushed the ball up the midfield through M. Olavarria who found N. Osorto racing down the right sideline. He would take the ball into the opponents 18 yard box and attempt a pass back to the middle that was knocked down by a BSM Elite defenders arm. PENALTY KICK! N. Osorto would line up for the penalty kick. He was as calm as could be as he stepped up to the penalty spot. He took a few steps back, looked up and picked his corner. He was going upper 90 to his left. It was a powerful shot. It had the height and the pace behind it, but it went just wide of the upper left hand corner of the goal. N. Osorto shook it off…and came right back with his dominating play up the right sideline. He came off the field minutes later, with his chin up and a smile on his face!
In the final minutes of the game, the defense needed a break. They played most of the game with no substitutions. Always ready to pinch in, I. Contreras and N. Osorto manned the back line…and they made sure that there would be no more scoring the rest of the afternoon for the opponents. With time running out, the EYS Turbos almost did it again. After D. Quishpi came off the field from a stint at the forward position, O. Rico would try to add to the score with the game winding down. A quick pass from the middle found O. Rico running in from the left and one on one with the goalie. As she got near the top of the penalty box, she let a shot go that would go just wide of the net. As the BSM goalkeeper took the ensuing goal kick…the referee would blow the final whistle to end the game. TURBOS WIN 4-1!!!
The EYS Turbos would keep their unbeaten streak alive and move to 4-0-0 on the season in league play!!
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!
