With 3 games left to play coming into this past weekend, the EYS Turbos were still in the hunt for a 1st place tie in Northeast Division going into Saturday's match against BMS Elite. The Turbos came in riding high, coming off back to back wins the previous weekend, and riding a 7 game winning streak. But not all was rosey for the Turbos as they were dealt some bad news coming into this game when they found out that forward I. Contreras would miss the rest of the season with torn ligaments in his ankle. The team was visibly upset with the news that one of their teammates was injured, but they put on their game faces and were determined to send him news of a victory on the day.
The playing field on the day was unusual, but nothing the Turbos weren't accustomed to, as they would be playing on a football field, with no soccer lines. The Turbos knew the field set up well, as this is how they scrimmage to end practice every week. Aside from having to deal with some saucer cones on the field to outline the penalty box, all else was the same.
EYS Turbos (5-0-1) vs. BSM Elite (1-0-5)
The Turbos would line up in their usual 2-3-1 formation on the day, with G. Falcon in goal. D. Quishpi, D. Lyons and N. Henriques would take care of the defensive responsibilities on the day. O. Rico, I. Nieves, C. Henao, D. Zokner, M. Shamy and N. Osorto would man the midfield. And at forward, L. Henriques and R. Monteiro would shoulder the attacking responsibilities.
As is customary with the Turbos...the game got off to a blistering start. The Turbos pressed from the opening whistle..and wouldn't let up the entire afternoon. Just 3 minutes in, their hard work would pay off. The play built from the back with N. Henriques starting the play from the backline to the midfield where I. Nieves would carry deep down the right side. He would find L. Henriques making a run at the forward position, but the defense closed in on him quickly. With not many options at goal, he dropped the ball back to D. Zokner who ripped a one time shot on net. The goalie made the initial save, but the rebound bounced out to the left side, where M. Shamy was waiting. Cool and collected...he took a step to settle the bouncing ball and drove home the first goal of the game!!
Turbos lead 1-0 in the 3rd minute!!!
The game would get a bit chippy in the next few minutes. Several of the opposing players were getting a little rough with the Turbos. The referee stopped play momentarily to calm things down, but that didn't last very long. In the 13th minute, I. Nieves was fouled hard as he was driving toward the penalty box. The Turbos earned a free kick from about 20 yards out on the right midfield side. I. Nieves looked up and took in his options. With Turbos covered in the box, he decided to go on goal with the free kick. IT. WAS. A. BEAUTY. I. Nieves took 3 steps and struck the ball hard and to the keepers left. The ball was about chest high, but had so much pace on it that there was no way anyone was getting to it. It was a screamer just inside the post and into the back of the net!
Turbos lead 2-0 in the 13th minute!!!
The game would calm down for a bit on the scoreboard, but not in action. The BSM Elite goalie seemed to have a force field around him for the next 7 minutes. The Turbos sent shot after shot after shot his way. Somehow, he was able to keep the ball out of the net. At one time, making 4 straight saves in the span of a few seconds. The Turbos were on fire...and so was the opposing goalie. Not to be outdone, G. Falcon and the Turbos defense were doing their part as well. D. Quishpi, D. Lyons and N. Henriques kept the BSM Elite team to the outside of the field and gave them nothing up the middle. Everything stayed to the outside..and the corner kick coverage was exceptional. There would be no freebies on this day. When a shot did get through, G. Falcon was there to parry it away or jump on a lose ball before any further threat was posed.
In the 20th minute, D. Quisphi would put another one on the scoresheet for the Turbos. This time play would build though the middle with C. Henao, and would eventually make it's way to the left side for N. Osorto. He would carry the ball up the left side and find D. Quishpi making a run at forward. With a quick pass to the speedy forward, D. Quishpi would make no mistake and send a shot high over the goalies outstretched arms to increase the Turbo lead!!!
Turbos lead 3-0 in the 20th minute!!!
8 minutes later...D. Quishpi would strike again. This time he would capitalize on a defensive mistake. As the BSM team tried to build from the back, D. Quishpi ran in and stole a pass intended for the left midfielder. With no time to react after the steal, the BSM goalie was helpless as D. Quisipi popped another one into the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 4-0 in the 28th minute!!!
That would be all the scoring for the first half as the Turbos would take a comfortable 4-0 lead into the break. They were in control, but they reminded each other as they came to the sideline that the game was not over yet. The Turbos came ready to play today!
The Turbos would build on their 4 goal lead early in the second half. Just 5 minutes in, they would again capitalize on a defensive mistake. This time, it would be I. Nieves who rushed in to steal a pass, make a quick move around a defender, and slide one past the goalie!!
Turbos lead 5-0 in the 35th minute!!!
Down by 5, the BSM team would make a goalie change. The Turbos would take the opportunity to do the same as D. Lyons would relieve G. Falcon the rest of the way.
With the game well under control, and down a forward, the Turbos took the opportunity to move some players around into different positions to work on different skills. They were in Turbo Down mode for a little bit, and the opponents took advantage. In the 41st minute they would pull one back after D. Lyons made a great save on a low shot, but the rebound bounced out to a charging player who found the back of the net.
Turbos lead 5-1 in the 40th minute.
Turbo Down mode didn't last long after that...as the Turbos switched back to Turbo Up mode and just 1 minute later pulled one right back. D. Lyons would start the play from the back and lay a ball out to L. Henriques on the left side. He would find N. Osorto up the left sideline. N. Osorto would try to feed a pass into C. Henao in the middle, but it was stolen. C. Henao would steal it back and play a quick one touch pass to N. Osorto who fed it right back to him with a leading pass. C. Henao would turn on the jets and blow past the defense and walk right in on goal and smoothly slide one past the keeper low and to the right side of the net!!
Turbos lead 6-1 in the 41st minute!!!
The opponents fought back a few minutes later and found the back of the net again in the 45th minute.
Turbos lead 6-2 in the 45th minute.
With 15 minutes left to play, the Turbos continued to tinker with their player positions. With a few players lining up in positions they weren't used to, the Turbos were a little cautious for a bit. The defense held things together in the back as L. Henriques was under constant attack on the left side, but made easy work of things turning every rush to the outside and sending great passes up to the midfield. On the right, N. Henriques and D. Quishpi did the same to make sure the Turbos would not concede again. In the middle, G. Falcon and O. Rico would connect on the right side a few times as both would send shots towards the goal from distance. At forward, R. Monteiro made some great runs and had a couple of near breakaways on goal, but the defense was determined and closed down on him forcing shots from distance as well. The Turbos continued to threaten, but couldn't find the back of the net. But their persistence wore the opponents down, and the Turbos would eventually get their due in the final minutes of the game.
D. Zokner would move up to the forward position for the final 8 minutes of the game..and he would make those minutes count. In the 52nd minute, M. Shamy would drive the ball down the left side of the field, quickly stop and let his defender blow right past him. He would pull the ball back to his right side and send a centering pass across the penalty box where D. Zokner was waiting in the middle. With little time to react, he settled the pass and blasted a shot high into the corner of the net!!
Turbos lead 7-2 in the 52nd minute!!!
Just 4 minutes later, they would strike again. O. Rico would send a ball into the middle to R. Monteiro. He had some some, but a defender was bearing down on him. Feeling the pressure, he sent a ball up the field where D. Zokner would run the pass down. After a crafty move around a defender, he pulled the ball to his right foot and slid another past the goalie!!
Turbos lead 8-2 in the 56th minute!!!
One minute later...it happened again. The teams weren't even settled in yet from the previous goal when D. Zokner stole a pass coming up the middle, drove in on net and ripped another shot off....and again, beat the goalie high!!
Turbos lead 9-2 in the 57th minute!!!
With 3 minutes left to play, the Turbos knew this one was over. The went into Turbo down mode the rest of the way, controlled the midfield and waited for the final whistle.
GAME OVER!! TURBOS WIN 9-2!!!
