The EYS Turbos had a week off from league play this weekend...but that doesn't mean they had a week off from competitive soccer. With a bye week on the schedule forcing them to sit idle, they were able to stay active by getting a crossover game scheduled. But not just any Crossover Game...the Turbos aimed high and scheduled a game against a Cedar Stars Academy team that is currently playing 3 divisions above them in the highest bracket of EDP Futures North. It would be quiet a challenge, but one the Turbos were looking forward to as a measuring stick against the higher divisions.
Unlike previous games this Spring, the Turbos would catch a break on the weather for this matchup. It was a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at Kenah Field with game time temperature around 75 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. The Turbos would play in their home Blues for this game, and Cedar Stars in their traditional bright green.
From the beginning, it was obvious this game would be played at a fast and furious pace. Right from the opening kick off, both teams looked for that first goal to take the early lead and put pressure on the opponent. Cedar Stars had the better of the play in the first couple of minutes earning corner kicks and free kicks right away. The defensive pairing of L. Henriques and D. Quishpi would make sure the corner kicks fell flat early, and goal keeper G. Falcon would do his part on the free kicks blocking early shots and jumping on rebounds. As good as the early defensive and goalie play was, it wouldn't be enough to hold the Cedar Stars team off the scoreboard as they would break through for the opening goal in the 5th minute of play.
Turbos down 1-0 in the 5th minute.
It wasn't the first time the Turbos had found themselves down early in a game, and if history has taught us anything about the Turbos...they don't stay down for long. It took them just one minute to shake it off and pull the game back even with a goal of their own. It was a goal that would set the tone for the rest of the day and how the Turbos would approach the rest of this game. The play started from the back line with L. Henriques sending a long ball from his LB position to I. Nieves at right midfield. After playing the ball up the field and back to the left side to N. Osorto, the Turbos initial attack was stopped as the Cedar Stars goalie picked up a loose ball and quickly sent the ball back upfield. I. Nieves would run back from his attacking position to bump to players off the ball and battle toward the goal. After freeing up some room for himself after a solid shoulder bump, he sent the ball across the middle and to the left midfield side where N. Osorto was waiting again. He would settle the ball on the first touch with a quick flick ahead to himself. After allowing the ball to bounce once, N. Osorto teed off and ripped a line drive shot over the goalie and into the back of the net!!
Turbos tied 1-1 in the 6th minute!!!
The Turbos were making their statement early. They took a blow...and dealt one right back. They had put the opponent on notice that the wouldn't be coming in here for a cake walk on this day!!
The game would settle down on the scoreboard after the initial goals, but not for lack of effort or chances. D. Lyons and N. Henriques would do their part on the defensive back line by blocking shots and keeping the opponents to the outside. When they were able to get a shot on net...G. Falcon again was there to thwart them off. On the other end of the field, the Turbos would have plenty of chances as well, especially from corner kicks as D. Lyons, N. Henriques, D. Quishpi and L. Henriques would each have chances to send shots on goal off of set plays and create plenty of excitement in front of the opposing goal.
In the 18th minute, the Turbos would find the back of the net again after another play that epitomized the Turbo style of play. It was a goal born of pure grit and determination. It started off a turnover as N. Henriques stepped up to intercept a pass and find D. Zokner in the midfield. D. Zokner would play the ball off to his left for M. Shamy, and it seemed like it was just a bit out of his reach. But M. Shamy dug deep and caught up to the ball before it got out of bounds and played it back to the middle. D. Zokner would have a crack at it and shoot it on goal, but the shot was blocked and bounced right back to him. Instead of taking another crack at it, he saw M. Shamy open to his left and laid it off to him again...and M. Shamy would bury the pass from D. Zokner into the back of the net to give the Turbos a 2-1 lead!
Turbos lead 2-1 in the 18th minute!!!
Up 2-1...and hungry for more. The Turbos would keep pressing to try to open the lead up even more. They would get their pay day and do just that int he 27th minute of play. The Turbos would open the lead up to 3-1 off another great team goal that was finished off by pin point passing and effort. After receiving a pass from D. Quispi on the right side, I. Nieves flew up the sideline and found C. Henao in the middle of the field, just yards from goal. C. Henao would rip a shot on goal, but it was deflected...straight to I. Nieves who blasted another shot on net, but that too was blocked. The rebound bounced back to C. Henao, who found J. Agudelo open to his left and quickly slid a pass over to him for the finish. J. Agudelo had to fight off a defender from his backside, he would hold him off, receive the pass, and lay the ball into the back of the net to increase the lead!!
Turbos up 3-1 in the 27th minute!!!
But...they weren't done yet. The Turbos were riding high and they were hungry for another goal before the half. Somehow, someway..they were going to get it. It came off a mad scramble in front of goal off another flurry of shots by the Turbos. D. Lyons blasted one in from the back to stop a rush. The ball he sent up bounced back to C.Henao in the middle, who put a shot on goal. The rebound bounced out to I. Nieves, who did his best to try to put a hole in the back of the net with a blistering shot, but that too was blocked and bounced straight up in the air just a few yards from goal. Never giving up on the play, and with his back to the goal, C. Henao waited for the ball to come down, and after taking one bounce, he teed it up and looped one high over the goalie to give the Turbos a 4-1 lead and send the crowd to their feet in applause.
Turbos lead 4-1 in the 29th minute!!!
That would be it for the first half, as the Turbos took a 3 goal lead into halftime.
The 2nd half started much like the first for the Cedar Stars. They again came out flying and full of energy. They pushed hard into the Turbos end, and again would get their pay off early into the half. This time, just 3 minutes into the half. G. Falcon would make the initial save on a shot from his left, and just as he reached back to secure the rebound with his right hand, a Cedar Stars forward jumped in and poked home the rebound.
Turbos lead 4-2 in the 33rd minute.
...again....what have we learned about the Turbos? Down..but never out. They would fight back and pull the lead back to 3 just minutes later. This time, It would be I. Contreras who would be on the finishing end of a great team effort. The play again started from the back side where N. Henriques played a ball up to O. Rico at right midfield. She would carry deep and play the ball into the middle to D. Zokner. After some fancy footwork and bouncing some defenders off of him, D. Zokner would use his vision to find I. Contreras making a run a at goal. He would hit him with a perfect pass, and I. Contreras would do the rest as he looked the keeper in they eyes and push the ball past him and into the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 5-2 in the 37th minute!!!
The lead would stay at 3 for a good stretch, but eventually, the Cedar Stars team would pull one back in the 44th minute. Like the Turbos, they were down, but never out and they kept pushing to crawl back into the game.
Turbos lead 5-3 in the 44th minute.
With just about 10 minutes left to play...the Turbos pushed hard for another goal to put some distance between them and the Cedar Stars team and put the game away for good. In the 49th minute, they would do just that. Again, it would be the combination of C. Henao and I. Nieves hooking up for another goal. I. Nieves would make a steal on a rush coming up his side and immediately turn defense into offense. He pushed up field, picked his head up and saw C. Henao running in on his left side. He sent a leading pass into C. Henao, who would do the rest and place another one into the back of the Cedar Stars goal!!
Turbos lead 6-3 in the 49th minute!!!
The game was just 10 minutes from ending. The Turbos were on the verge of picking up a win against a team playing 3 divisions ahead of them, and they were doing it while keeping full control of the game. ..and just when you thought the scoring was done for the day...the Turbos found the back of the net again. The Turbos' last goal of the day came in the 56th minute off the foot of O. Rico. It would be another terrific team goal as play started from the back off the foot of L. Herniques. He would play a long ball up the side to N. Osorto. He would take the ball deep and play it across the middle to I. Contreras in front of goal. Without a clear shot on net, he turned to his right where he saw a wide open O. Rico. He quickly sent a pass that way, and after settling the incoming pass, O. Rico sent a high shot from the right side, over the keeper and into the left back side of the net!
Turbos lead 7-3 in the 56th minute!!!
With just 3 minutes left to play, the Cedar Stars team would pull another one back in the 57th minute, but it was too little too late. Just minutes later the final whistle would blow...and the Turbos would erupt in cheer and walk away victorious!!
Turbos win 7-4!!!
It was a Crossover Game, and didn't count for league standings, but it was a GREAT game and win for the Turbos. They played their style of "Turbo Soccer" all day and came away with the win. It was a true team effort from start to finish: 7 goals, from 6 different players and everyone from goalie to defense to midfield to forwards was involved and a part of every goal!! Way to go TURBOS!!!
