The EYS Turbos unbeaten streak continues!!!
The EYS Turbos hosted Cedar Stars Acadmey at Kenah Field for their 3rd game of the EDP Season (2nd league game) on Sunday afternoon. The EYS Turbos were a few players short, but they came ready to play.
Cedar Stars came out flying in the first 2 minutes of the game. The made some deep runs into the Turbos zone and peppered the net with shot after shot…but the bend but don’t break defense of D. Quishpi and N. Henriques withstood the early test…and goalkeeper G. Falcon made save after save after save early to keep the Cedar Stars team off the scoresheet. After weathering the early storm, the Turbos would draw first blood on the counter attack. After a great save on a shot destined for the back of the net, G. Falcon played the ball to his defensive pairing who moved the ball quickly up the right wing. I. Nieves would take a pass from the defense and turn quickly up the field. He would find some open room in the middle of the field and blast a goal into the back of the opponents net to open the scoring in the 3rd minute of play! Turbos lead 1-0.
Cedar Stars were not to be outdone. Immediately from the kick off, they would press right back into the Turbos defensive zone. After a few blocked shots by N. Henriques the Cedar Stars team would earn a corner kick. After playing a good ball in off the corner, the ball would bounce to an open Cedar Stars player who would find the back of the net in the 5th minute. Game tied 1-1.
The game would start to settle down a little after that, with both teams having some quality chances to add to the score. G. Falcon stopped a couple of breakaway chances by rushing out of goal to give the charging forwards nowhere to shoot to keep the score tied. On the other end, O. Rico just missed on a cross from the right side by M. Olavarria to the left side of the Cedar net. Shortly after, O. Rico would go down with an injury after trying to put a shot on goal. She tried to battle through the pain when the ball was played back to her, but the Turbo forward couldn’t go on. I. Contreras would come in for the injured Turbo. Just minutes later, the Turbos would break through again. I. Contreras would split the defense and put a blistering shot on goal. The Cedar Stars goalie was equal to the task and made the save, but the rebound would bounce out to a charging M. Shamy who eased the ball into the back of the net! Turbos lead 2-1.
As the half was coming to an end, a clearance from the Cedar Stars team found it’s way to the feet of D. Quishpi playing RB. He would settle the ball down, look up and find the Cedar Stars goalie out of position. From just inside the midfield line, D. Quishpi would blast a moon shot over the entire defense, including the goalie, and increase the Turbo lead in the 27th minute! Turbos lead 3-1.
Halftime.
The EYS Turbos would make a goalie change in the second half with D. Lyons taking over the goalkeeping duties. Again, the Cedar Stars team came out flying, and D. Lyons would be equal to the task early. He would make save after save in the first 9 minutes to keep the Turbo lead at 3-1. Not phased by the pressure, the Turbos would turn it right back around on the visitors. In the 39th minute, D. Lyons played a long ball up the sideline to I. Nieves who raced down the right sideline and would send a center pass into the middle. M. Olavarria was waiting who wasted no time and one-timed a shot in the back of the Cedar Stars net! Turbos leads 4-1.
The next 6 minutes of the game would be fast and furious with a total of 5 goals being scored during that span. Cedar Stars would bounce back quickly in the 41st with a shot from near midfield that found it’s way between players on both teams and screened the Turbos keeper and into the back of the net. Turbos lead 4-2.
Not to be outdone, the Turbos would bounce right back in the 42nd minute after a shot by M. Olavarria was blocked by a handball from the Cedar Stars defense, the Turbos earned a free kick from 17 yards from goal. M. Olavarria would line up for the shot and drill a shot between the Cedar Stars defense and past their diving goalie into the back of the net! Turbos lead 5-2.
That must have been a bit of a wake up call for the Cedar Stars as they would battle right back with two quick goals of their own in the 44th and 45th minutes. Turbos lead 5-4.
Perhaps fatigued a little, the Turbos would send some fresh legs up at forward. From the kick off, the ball would be played to the right to R. Monteiro just behind the midfield line. He would center to G. Falcon who would swing it all the way to his left to a rushing I. Nieves who would find himself one on one with the Cedar Stars goalie..and make no mistake. He would drill the ball into the back of the net to cushion the Turbos lead a little in the 47th minute. Turbos lead 6-4.
Determined to keep the game close, Cedar Stars pushed hard in the next in the last few minutes of the game…and their determination would pay off. Again they found the back of the net with two quick goals in the 55th and 57th minutes to bring the game to a draw. The score was now 6-6.
Again, the Turbos would answer the bell. DETERMINED not to let the game slip away, the Turbos went back to their passing ways and moved the Cedar Stars players all over the field in the last few minutes of play. With just 2 minutes left to play, the Turbos would be rewarded for their teamwork. After a battle for the ball in the midfield, M. Olavarria would come away with it and play the ball up to I. Contreras who would rush up the middle towards the Cedar Stars goal. As the defense collapsed on him, I. Contreras would find a wide open C. Henao running into space in the 58th minute. C. Henao would move up the field with the defense chasing him down and finesse a shot past the diving Cedar Stars keeper and into the back of the net! Turbos lead 7-6!
The visiting team tried hard to pull one back and get the draw, but D. Lyons would not allow it as he rushed out with just seconds left to play to grab a loose ball at the top of the penalty box. As he kicked it back out towards midfield, the final whistle would blow! TURBOS WIN 7-6!!!
