Game 2 of the 2016 Fall Season saw the EYS Turbos on the road for a second straight week, this time to face the Cedar Stars from Staten Island. It was a warm fall afternoon. The sky was clear, the field was freshly painted...and the Turbos were eager to get on the field.
As the game kicked off, the EYS Turbos were down a couple of players. O. Rico was ruled out of the game with a fever during pregame warm ups. D. Zokner would arrive a later in the first half after some GPS issues. Both teams went back and forth for a few minutes just feeling each other out. The Turbos would put on some early pressure with a few shots on goal from R. Monteiro and M. Shamy, but the Cedar Stars goalie was equal to the task and turned them away. Then, midway through the first half, the Cedar Stars found the back of the net. A bouncing ball found it's way to a Cedar Stars player at the top of the penalty box and he kicked a towering ball over the Turbo goalkeeper. N. Henriques got his hand on it, but it was just a little too high. A perfect shot sailed in despite N. Henriques' best effort. The Turbos were down 1-0.
The EYS Turbos weren't discouraged though. They battled on with pressure on the wings from I. Nieves and C. Henao. The duo ran the ball up and down their wings, forcing the ball into the middle for some more opportunities...but the ball just wasn't going into the Cedar Stars goal. As the 1st half was coming to a close, the Cedar Stars were awarded a direct kick from just outside the penalty spot. The EYS Turbos put up their wall...and everyone was covered. The Cedar Stars player took the shot...and some bad luck struck. The ball deflected off of a Turbo player and found the back of the net. Sometimes, things just don't go your way....but...the Turbos refused to get discouraged. Minutes later the whistle blew for halftime.
The EYS Turbos came to the sideline with their chins up. They were down...but definitely not out.
The 2nd half started with the Turbos down 2-0. G. Falcon started the 2nd half in net, while N. Henriques switched from his usual defensive position to play forward. The EYS Turbos were relentless in the 2nd half. The dominated possession and kept the ball in the Cedar Stars end for most of the rest of the game. N. Osorto took command of the right side of the midfield and pelted the net with shots every chance he got. D. Lyons took care of the defense on that side and was a rock. L. Henriques took command of the left side of the defense and made sure no one got through. D. Quishpi on the left moved the ball up the field at a furious pace. A combination of D. Zokner and M. Olavarria controlled the middle of the field and let it be known that no one comes through the middle.
..and then they broke through. In the 42nd minute, the EYS Turbos rushed up the left side. I. Nieves tried to play the ball into the middle, but it was blocked. D. Zokner picked up the loose ball and shot it from the left side...it missed everyone and seemed to be going wide. Then, out of nowhere, M. Olavarria came darting in from the right and tapped the ball into the back of the net. GOAL! The EYS Turbos were on the board after some great team play. 2-1 Cedar Stars.
Having finally found the back of the net...the EYS Turbos were hungry for more. They pushed right back into the Cedar Stars end, and after some great play in the middle of the field, the ball found it's way to D. Quishpi's feet in the 55th minute. He made no mistake and made the best out of his opportunity. He looked up, sized up his competition..and took the shot. GOAL! 2-2...and just like that the EYS Turbos were tied.
With 5 minutes left to play..some EYS Turbos were getting tired. The Cedar Stars team came down and put on some pressure trying to take the lead back, but G. Falcon stood tall. After turning the Cedar Stars team away, he played the ball up to his defense.
4 minutes left to play.
The defense pushed the ball up to the midfield. The midfield pushed the ball up the field to the forwards. The EYS Turbos broke in 4 on 2. Tired and with nothing left in tank but their determination and heart...they kept pushing up the field. The put on a passing clinic in the final third of the field...and eventually the ball found it's way to the feet of M. Olavarria.
3 minutes left to play.
M. Olavarria shoots...and scores, netting his second goal of the game for the brace. GOAL!! The EYS Turbos fought all the way back from 2-0 and now found themselves up 3-2 with very little time left on the clock. The game wasn't over yet.
The Cedar Stars team were determined to get the goal back.
2 minutes left to play.
The Cedar Stars pushed and got the ball deep to the wings. They tried to get the ball into the center, but would be denied by the N. Henriques how kicked the ball out of play. The Cedar Stars ran to get the ball back in play quickly and as they played it in...the final whistle blew! THE EYS TURBOS WIN!!! FINAL SCORE 3-2!!!
The EYS Turbos put together a true team effort on the road in enemy territory. Down 2-0 at the half, they found a way to battle back and played hard for each other. Their hard work was rewarded after some unlucky bounces...and they walked away the victors!! Way to go EYS Turbos. After 2 weeks of play, the Turbos find themselves alone at the top of the standings with 4 points. The EYS Turbos will make their home debut next week against the 1-0 Madison Area YMCA Storm.
