The EYS Turbos played their home opener this past weekend at O'Brien field looking to 2-0 to start the season after a road win in Scotch Plains last week. It was a blistering hot day with temperatures unusually HOT for late September...but the only thing hotter on the day was the mighty EYS Turbos as they start the EDP season off with 2 straight victories!!!
After watching the EYS Eagles finish up their game with a victory in commanding fashion, the EYS Turbos looked to continue the EYS momentum on the day against the visiting Global GSA Jersey City visitors. The temperature was in the 90's and there was no wind. It was a hot day, and the Turbos were going to need everyone to step up for a full team effort to get the job done...and GET THE JOB DONE THEY DID!!!
From the opening whistle, the Turbos were in complete command of the game. Early on defensive pairing of N. Henriques and D. Quishpi made easy work of attacks to their zone by turning defenders to the outside and playing the ball up quickly to the midfield. In the midfield, D. Zokner, N. Osorto and O. Rico were ready and quickly turned balls played from the back to offense with swift passing put the middle and the sides and up to L. Henriques at forward. All the while, G. Falcon manned the goal and came off his line early and often to squash any would be threats. The Turbos were putting plenty of pressure on the visitors with several shots going just wide of the target. Finally, in the 8th minute, their hard work and determination paid off. After a few shots from the sides got blocked, D. Zokner's shot would find it's way to the feet of a perfectly placed N. Osorto who buried the first goal of the match in the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 1-0 in the 8th minute!!
With the temperature so hot on the day, the Turbos went with the strategy of wholesale substitutions on the day. In the 12th minute, the starting 6 would come off entirely, and a whole set of fresh legs would take the field. The first round of subs were not to be outdone. In the back, D. Lyons and I. Contreras carried the torch and allowed nothing up the middle, while playing deep balls up to the midfield. I. Nieves, C. Henao and M. Shamy would be there waiting and quickly transition the ball to forward R. Monteiro who threatened to with each touch of the ball placing shots on goal. Just one minute after coming into the game, the fresh legs paid off. In the 13th minute, after some jockeying in the midfield, I. Nieves would find C. Henao who ripped a shot into the back of the net to increase the Turbos lead!!
Turbos lead 2-0 in the 13th minute!!
The game would settle down for a little bit with both teams starting to feel the effects of the hot and humid day, but the Turbos would get on the score sheet again in the 22nd minute. This time it would be I. Nieves who would pick up a pass/rebound from C. Henao and bury the Turbos 3rd goal of the game!!
Turbos lead 3-0 in the 22nd minute!!
Just after the 3rd goal of the game, the Turbos would make wholesale changes once again with the final substitutions of the 1st half. Fresh legs came on...and the results were the same. Just one minute after being subbed on, L. Henriques, now shifted back to left back, would chase a defender down deep into his zone and steal the ball. With a quick pullback, he turned the play back the other way. The midfield of N. Osorto, D. Zokner and O. Rico all played their parts as they found their positions and made quick runs into open space, pull the defense with them. As they did, L. Henriques looked up and found D. Quishpi, now playing forward, running down the left side. With a perfectly placed through ball from L. Henriques, D. Quishpi turned on the jets and caught up to the pass in stride. He would go in 3 v 1 against the goalie. With options to his left and right, the goalie was completely frozen as D. Quishpi walked in an drilled a shot high into the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 4-0 in the 23rd minute!!
With the game completely under their control, the Turbos were looking confident. As the half was coming to a close, the Turbos would give up a couple of chances on goal as they were trying to pass the ball around to slow the game down. But not to worry...G. Falcon was up to the test. He would make a couple of saves to bail the back line out...as well as run up to the top of his box to cut off through balls on a couple of occasions. With one minute left to play in the half, he would play the ball up to the right side to N. Henriques. He would transition play up the wing and into the offensive zone. The ball went deep into the right side of the field, where after a few crossing attempts were blocked, D. Zokner would lay the ball back to the defender who started the play. From distance, N. Henriques charged up from his right back position and would blast a screamer into the the back of the visitor's net!!
Turbos lead 5-0 in the 29th minute!!
That would cap the scoring for the 1st half, as both teams ran off exhausted.
With the game well in hand, the Turbos used the second half to work on some passing and move some players around to different positions. By design and under direction from their coaches, the Turbos moved the ball around methodically for most of the second half. G. Falcon would be relieved of his goal tending duties by D. Lyons. On the back line some changes were also made as M. Shamy and C. Henao would get their first chances to play defense on the season. N. Henriques and would get a much needed break from the back line and move up to forward...and for the first time in a long time, G. Falcon would take a position in the midfield.
Forced to play out of position to hone their overall skills, the Turbos did not crack!! Everyone played their positions perfectly and held the opponents at bay. While the Turbos weren't pressing much in the second half, they continued to give the opponents fits as they gave them little to no chances on goal. D. Lyons would make a couple of quick reaction saves from corner kicks, but no real threats were ever posed up the middle. It was an overall team effort to lock down the game.
In the 37th minute, the Turbos were rewarded for their stellar team defense as they got the OK from their coaches to go for goal again. It didn't take long after getting the OK. M. Shamy, playing left back received a pass on a restart from D. Lyons in goal. He would easily sidestep an attacking forward and send a perfect through ball up the left sideline to the speedy I. Contreras. It was a race to the net as I. Contreras went in with a defender on his back. He would use his positioning to shoulder the defender away just enough to create a bit of separation...and that would be all he needed as he dribbled in at top speed and under control before laying the final Turbo goal of the day into the back of the net!
Turbos lead 6-0 in the 37th minute!!
6 minutes later, the Turbos would concede their first goal of the EDP season, but not because of a breakdown. The visiting team was awarded a free kick from 18 yards out. The Turbos set up their defensive wall to cover the left side of the net, while D. Lyons was in perfect position covering the right side. Only a perfectly placed shot was going to beat them here..and a perfect shot it was. The visiting midfielder struck the ball hard and high...just over D. Lyons outstretched hand an into the upper corner of the net. There was nothing that could have been done to save the shot on goal.
Turbos lead 6-1 in the 43rd minute!!
With the clock winding down, the Turbos had a few more chances on goal as R. Monteiro found himself in the penalty box a few times and would try to get shots off, but the defenders swarmed him to prevent any clear chances. O. Rico and N. Henriques would have some chances as well, and G. Falcon would rip a shot from outside the penalty box that went just wide...but the Jersey City team was determined not to concede any more goals as they brought everyone back on defense in the final minutes.
The final whistle blew!! TURBOS WIN 6-1!!!! GAME OVER!!!
The win was a COMPLETE team effort that featured 6 goals from 6 different players, Turbos playing out of position to work on areas to improve their individual skills, and terrific sportsmanship from a Turbo squad that realized early that they had control of the game!! GREAT JOB TURBOS!!!
