Another Sunday…another TURBO VICTORY!!
The EYS Turbos took their unbeaten streak on the road this week to face the Madison Area YMCA squad Sunday afternoon. The Turbos were 2-0-0 (W-D-L) in league play coming into the game. Madison Area YMCA were 1-0-2 (W-D-L). The Turbos were 0-1-1 against the Madison team coming into this game, earning a 4-4 draw at home last season, and losing 5-0 on the Madison grass field in the Fall.
The game was scheduled for a 2pm kick off in Madison, but that didn’t exactly happen. Due to referee conflict, the game was delayed approximately 30 minutes. The Turbos took the time to get some extra warm ups in to keep warm on a brisk afternoon.
The game would start off very slowly as the teams adjusted to the field conditions. The Madison field was “choppy” at best. High Grass and dirt areas throughout. The ball just wasn’t moving very well…which didn’t bode well for the Turbos who were playing their first game on grass in league play. Nonetheless…they adjusted. The defensive pairing of N. Henriques and D. Quispi had their hands full with the Madison forwards, but they did an excellent job of thwarting off their early rushes as they got used to the pitch.
After feeling each other out with a lot of midfield play early on, the Madison team would draw first blood in the 10th minute of play. After a throw in, the ball would bounce around the top of the penalty box, and squirt out to a waiting Madison player. He went in one on one with goalie G. Falcon and would place a shot into the back of the goal. Turbos down 1-0.
It didn’t take long for the EYS Turbos to pull back even. Just for minutes later in the 14th minute, the Turbos would equalize. After a quick restart from the back, N. Henriques played the ball up the left sideline for L. Henriques. He would barrel up the field and send the ball across the middle to D. Zokner at center midfield, who would quickly play the ball up to a determined I. Contreras. I. Contreras would take the ball from the top of the penalty box, cut across to the right and slam a shot home across the goal to the lower left side just inside the post and past a sprawling Madison goalie!! A true team effort all the way around on the equalizing goal! Turbos tied 1-1.
The Turbos would continue to put pressure on just minutes later as O. Rico and M. Olavarria combined in the midfield to find I. Contreras again sprinting up into an attacking position. This time the ball would be played to his left side and he would try to find the back of the net off a one timer with his left foot, but it went just wide. Just as quickly, the Madison team would try to take the lead as they took the goal kick straight up the right sideline and get past the backline. Again, one on one with goalkeeper G. Falcon, the Madison forward would blast a shot destined for the back of the goal, but G. Falcon would have none of it as he dove to his left to knock the ball down.
The 1st half would end 1-1.
The second half wasn’t much different from the first. M. Shamy took control of the left side of the midfield and attempted to play a few through balls up to the forwards, but the high grass would slow the ball down and end the rush. Likewise on the right side, R. Monteiro and I. Nieves would make their way into the opponents zone, but their crosses to the middle would be cut off by the high grass. It was a frustrating afternoon for the Turbos wingers who are used to playing on turf where the ball moves much quicker.
Midway through the 2nd half, the Turbos would be hit with an injury. After diving across the goal to make a save, goalkeeper G. Falcon came up hurting. He landed hard on his back and was unable to continue. A confident I. Nieves looked up and knew his name was going to be called for goalkeeper duty…and as G. Falcon was taken off the field, I. Nieves put on his goalie gloves, looked up with a nod and said “I got this”. The Turbos knew they were in good hands.
The Madison team tried to take advantage of the goalie change right away, peppering I. Nieves with shot after shot, but he was equal to the task and kept the game tied at 1. With about 10 minutes left to play, the Turbos nearly broke the tie. D. Quishpi would break up a rush up the left sideline and quickly turn the ball up to midfielder C. Henao. After a quick move around a Madison player, he would play the ball up to a charging D. Lyons who found himself alone with only the Madison goalkeeper in front of him. The Madison defense would charge back quickly and bump D. Lyons just enough as he let off a shot that was pegged for the right hand corner of the goal, but the Madison keeper dove across to keep the game tied.
With just 4 minutes left to play, this one looked like it was destined to end in a draw. But someone forgot to tell N. Osorto that. In the 56th minute, from a goal kick, N. Henriques would play the ball up the right side to N. Osorto. After a quick move to his outside, he would beat the charging Madison midfielder and get by him. He had nothing but open space up the right side and would turn on the jets to move up the sideline quickly. After a quick look up, he passed the ball into the middle to I. Contreras. With two defenders closing in on him, he would split them both and play the ball up into space and blast a shot from just inside the penalty area and into the back of the Madison net!! GOAL!! Turbos lead 2-1!!
The final 3 minutes of the game felt like an eternity as the Madison team pushed hard for the equalizer. After on last save from a Madison rush, I. Nieves played the ball to D. Quishpi who would punt the ball up to the midfield..and the referee would blow the final whistle! EYS TURBOS WIN 2-1!!!
The EYS Turbos would keep their unbeaten streak alive and move to 3-0-0 on the season in league play!!
