...and then they came home.
Game 3 of the 2016 Fall season was the EYS Turbos first home game of the year. The EYS Turbos would square off with the Madison Area YMCA Storm on a late Fall Sunday afternoon. There was a chill on the air...but there was plenty of heat on the field.
The EYS Turbos kept their season long form of dominating possession early. Some early chances by O. Rico, C. Henao and R. Monteiro were turned aside by the Madison goalie. N. Osorto would play the ball up the right side to I. Nieves on a few occasions, but those chances too were pushed aside by the Madison team. The Turbos were determined to score...and they would draw first blood in the 9th minute of the game after a nice defensive stop by N. Henriques would send the midfield flying up the middle. M. Olavarria would end up playing a ball up to D. Zokner who made no mistake and drilled it into the back of the net. EYS Turbos up 1-0!!
The lead would be short lived however. A few minutes later, Madison would equalize and make the score 1-1. That too would be short lived. Some sharp passing up front led to a foul just outside the penalty box resulting in a Turbos free kick. L. Henriques would line up to take it...and as cool as the air was today, so was he. He put the ball past the goalie giving the EYS Turbos the lead again. 2-1
But the Madison team would no lay down. They fought their way back and with a break up the right side they were in on goal. A shot from the right be D. Lyons on the far side. He was in position, but the shot was just too far off to his left. Tough break...and the game was back tied 2-2...and that's how the first half would end.
The second half would kick off with a change in goal for both teams. The Turbos would go back to G. Falcon between the pipes. G. Falcon came up big early in the half with some huge stops...but the Madison team would keep the pressure on and eventually take the lead. The Turbos were down early in the 2nd half 3-2...but there was a lot of game left to play.
In the 41st minute, the EYS Turbos would bring it back even. After a great run up the left side by M. Shamy, D. Quishpi would hit the post off of a blistering shot from a free kick. The Turbos would keep the pressure on and earn a coner kick. D. Zokner would play the ball in from the corner to the foot of M. Olavarria who would shot it, follow his rebound and find the back of the net to bring the game to a 3-3 tie. The EYS Turbos were flying high...and they kept the pressure on. 10 minutes later after another flurry of shots, the EYS Turbos lined up for another corner kick in the 51st minute. This time, M. Olavarria would play the ball in...the ball went straight along the end line from the corner and D. Zokner would end up tapping it in short side past the Madison goalie. 4-3 EYS TURBOS TAKE THE LEAD!!!
With just 9 minutes left to play, the EYS Turbos buckled down, determine to hold their lead...but the Madison team had different ideas. After a tough slip and fall in the box, a Turbo player just happened to land on the ball..resulting in a Madison penalty shot. As the teams lined up awaiting the kick to be taken...goalie G. Falcon began getting in the Madison shooter's head. He would run his goal line from side to side touching both posts...and then settle in for the kick. The Madison player ran up...shot...and hit the post!! The EYS Turbos rushed in and cleared the ball out. The Turbos were holding onto their lead with everything they had.
Then, with 3 minutes left to play...a bad bounce off the right side found it's way to 3 Madison players waiting in the middle of the field. The would push the ball into the penalty box and rip off a shot that found it's way into the back of the net to tie the game at 4.
..and that's how it would end. Both teams played their hearts out and would walk away with a point a piece...both having earned a draw. A win would have been great...but in the end, the game ended as it should. Both teams walked away with chins held high having played a very entertaining game.
The EYS Turbos have a bye next week, but will be back at it on October 16th when they welcome the Hillsborough Raiders to O'Brien field at 2:15pm.
