Coming off a 1st place tournament finish last week, the EYS Turbos were back at in in EDP League play this past weekend. Game 4 of the EDP season had the Turbos traveling to Madison to play a familiar opponent. The Turbos faced off against the Madison Coyotes for the 4th time in 2 years. The Turbos are 1-1-1 against Madison....and went in looking to tip the overall head to head record in their favor.
As is becoming customary at the Madison field...the game was delayed for 45 minutes while both teams waited for the referee to show up. The Turbos kept lose kicking the ball around to keep active on a beautiful Fall Day. When the game official finally showed up, the Turbos were ready to go.
It didn't take long for the scoring to be opened...as the Turbos wasted no time in getting on the score sheet in this one. Just one minute into game play, the Turbos did what they've doing best of late: Turning defense into offense. The Madison team pushed hard to go up the middle, but were quickly stopped by N. Henriques. After stopping the rush, he passed the ball to his defensive partner D. Quishpi who started the rush for the opening goal. With a terrific long ball up the right sideline, D. Quishpi led I. Nieves perfectly down the line. I. Nieves pushed the ball deep into the offensive zone down the right sideline, and after a quick cutback he laid a beautiful aerial pass into the penalty box where I. Contreras was waiting. Under control, I. Contreras watched the ball come in, chested it down to his feet and blasted a shot low and to the right of the keeper!
Turbos lead 1-0 in the 1st minute of play!!!
The lead would be short lived however, as the Madison team struck back quickly in the 4th minute after a Turbo defender slipped on the slick grass in the middle of the field. With the Turbo defense chasing the Madison attacker down, he got off a quick shot to tie the game at 1.
Turbos tied 1-1 in the 4th minute.
It was starting to look like we might have a shoot out on our hands in this one...but the Turbo's settled things down quickly...and were determined to get the lead back. They pressed hard and seemed to be living on the offensive side of the field most of the time. Eventually their persistence would pay off as again I. Nieves would play a cross in from the right side. This time, it was a waiting N. Osorto who stood ready to get the lead back. As the ball came across from the right, N. Osorto ran in from his left midfield position, settled the ball on his left foot, and blasted a shot into the back of the goal!
Turbos lead 2-1 in the 8th minute!!!
The Turbos kept pressing. M. Shamy and O. Rico came on in relief of N. Osorto and I. Nieves and continued to wing play down the sidelines. With C. Henao and D. Zokner controlling the middle and swinging the ball from side to side, the Madison team didn't know where to look. I. Contreras and R. Monteiro continued to give the defense fits with shot after shot on goal. Cross after cross came in from the wings, and there were Turbos in the middle waiting to put shots on goal. After a steady diet of play from the wings, the Madison team started to open up the middle...and that's when the Turbos struck again. After D. Lyons pushed the ball from his right back position up to C. Henao at midfield, the Madison midfield rushed to cover the wing pass. C. Henao looked up and saw I. Contreras alone in the middle...he quickly passed it into I. Contreras who slammed another one into the back of the net!
Turbos lead 3-1 in the 23rd minute!!!
The Madison team pushed hard to get one back. Just a few minutes later after a steal in the midfield, the Madison team rushed in 3 on 1. As the center forward pushed the ball up towards the goal, G. Falcon made the quick decision to cut down his angle and rushed the attacker. Just as the Madison player ripped a shot off, G. Falcon dove at his feet. There was a loud thump as the ball went straight into G. Falcon's chest preventing the Madison team from cutting the lead to 1!!
The half would end with the Turbos leading 3-1 as a result of some GREAT team play all around the field. EVERY player in every position contributed to the halftime result.
The second half started much quieter on the scoresheet than the first, but not from lack of effort. D. Zokner and C. Henao continued to feed great through balls up the wings and middle. R. Monteiro and I. Contreras were on the receiving end of most of them, but the defense had learned their lesson and wasn't giving them much room to move. The 2nd half would remain scoreless for 12 minutes...until the Turbos struck again. In the 42nd minute N. Osorto would connect with I. Contreras to increase the lead to 3. The play started on the right side with N. Henriques feeding a ball up the line to I. Nieves. Instead of rushing the sideline, I. Nieves looked to switch the field and passed the ball to the middle where D. Zokner was waiting. Quickly he shifted the ball all the way to the left side where N. Osorto pushed the ball forward into the box and laid a beautiful pass across the middle to I. Contreras who would not let it go to waste as he drilled another ball into the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 4-1 in the 42nd minute!!!
It didn't take long for the 5th goal to come for the Turbos. Just ONE minute later, the EYS Turbos would make the Madison team pay again. Right off the kick off, the Turbos rushed in and stole a pass. Playing the ball off the the right side again, this time I. Nieves took the ball deep down the line, cut back to his left foot and played a ball into I. Contreras who was in perfect position again. Wasting no time, he took the pass from I. Nieves and quickly put the ball on goal...and in the goal!!
Turbos lead 5-1 in the 43rd minute!!!
The Turbos would make a goalie change in the 45th minute as D. Lyons was itching to get back between the posts. He would replace G. Falcon for the last 15 minutes of the game...and was tested immediately. Not to be outdone by his counterpart, D. Lyons was equal to everything the Madison team threw at him early being forced to make a few quick saves from crosses, and keeping the Turbo lead at 4.
The Turbos would take a bit of a blow in this one as O. Rico and M. Shamy had to take a bit of a rest late in the game with some minor injuries. Both tried to battle through it, but M. Shamy was visibly limping a bit, and O. Rico just seemed gassed. The Turbos would pick up their teammates and Turbo On!
In the 53rd minute, the Turbos would put the icing on the cake with their final goal of the game. After a steal in the midfield, G. Falcon played the ball to the left where N. Osorto was waiting. Again, he used his speed to get down the sideline and send the ball across the middle of the field into the penalty box...and again I. Contreras was waiting. Capping the scoring with his 5th goal of the game, I. Contreras ripped a shot across the net to beat the goalie!!
Turbos lead 6-1 in the 53rd minute!!!
In the final minutes, the Turbos worked hard to close this one out. They would concede one more goal in the 55th minute to cut the lead to 6-2, but that would be all. The SUPERB defensive play of D. Quishpi and N. Henriques would ensure there was nothing else getting by them on this day.
The final whistle blew...TURBOS WIN 6-2!!!!!
It was a complete and dominating team effort. From goalkeepers to midfielders to forwards...EVERYONE played an excellent game. There were key contributions on every goal from every position leading up to the goals...and on the defensive side, aside from a slip on the slick grass...nothing got by the back line! True Turbo effort all around!!! With the victory, the Turbos move to 3-0-1 on the season.
