The EDP Spring season has officially begun!! After playing to a draw in a Spring Warm Up Crossover game last week (Crossover games do not count in the standings), the EYS Turbos took the field this week at home for their first League game of the Spring Season.
The EYS Turbos hosted the Millburn SC Flash at Kenah Field for their home opener on a warm Sunday afternoon. The sun was out, the weather was perfect, and the Turbos showed up ready to play. Right from the start, the Turbos began to impose their will on the visiting Millburn team. Great ball movement between the midfield by I. Nieves, M. Shamy and N. Osorto and forward O. Rico lead to a constant barrage of shots early against the Millburn team, but their goalie was more than equal to the task. The Millburn goalie kept them in the game early with some spectacular saves...once diving all the way to his left to pull back a shot that was destined for the back of the net off the foot of I. Contreras, and again on a one time shot by O. Rico on a cross from I. Nieves. On the other end, when the visiting team was able to get past some great defense in the midfield, the combination of D. Quishpi and N. Henriques made sure that nothing was getting past them for a threat on goal as G. Falcon barked out orders from the goal.
The onslaught of offensive pressure by the Turbos finally paid dividends in the 13th minute of the game. After some good combination play in the middle of the field, L. Henriques found M. Olavarria wide open near the top of the penalty box. M. Olavarria would settle the ball, make a quick move and open the scoring with a laser beam shot into the back of the Millburn net. Turbos up 1-0.
It didn’t take long for goal #2. Momentum was on the Turbos side, and they weren’t going to let it go to waste. They would steal the ball immediately after the kick off and rush right back up the middle into the Millburn zone. Still in the 13th minute, a shot by M. Olavarria was blocked by the Millburn defense and bounced out to I. Contreras who made no mistake and buried the ball into the back of the net!! Turbos up 2-0.
Goal #3 wasn’t far behind! Just 9 minutes later in the 22nd minute, the hustle, determination and vision of N. Osorto would lead to the 3rd goal. After a Millburn rush into the Turbo zone, G. Falcon would rush out and pick up a ball in the box before the rushing forwards could get there. G. Falcon quickly played the ball up the right side to defender D. Quishpi. D. Quishpi turned and made terrific leading pass up the right sideline to a rushing N. Osorto who would take the ball deep in to the Millburn zone. He would find M. Olavarria running up the middle and put the ball right on his feet, and he would bury it in the back of the goal for his 2nd of the game! Turbos up 3-0.
Less than a minute later, the Millburn team would find a way to pull one back, and that would end the scoring for the first half. The Turbos would take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
The 2nd half started in much the same way as the 1st half. The Turbos continued to dominate the middle of the field. On the defensive side, N. Henriques, D. Zokner and D. Quishpi controlled the backline and started the offensive rushes with some spectacular passing from the defensive third of the field up to the midfielders. The crisp passing and communication would pay off in the 43rd minute. After some back in forth in the midfield, L. Henriques would break out on the left side with the ball and start making his way toward the Millburn goal. He would drive a shot toward the goal that was deflected and bounced back to him. L. Henriques reacted quickly and sent the ball back to the right to I. Nieves who took a quick shot and found the back of the Millburn net! Turbos up 4-1.
Goal #5…came just a minute later! Again the Turbos would steal the ball right from the kick off as R. Monteiro rushed in and caused the visiting midfield into a bad pass. I. Nieves would jump on it, dribble up the right sideline and send a cross across the goal to a waiting I. Contreras. He would settle the ball, look up, and finesse a shot to the right side of the goal past a diving goalkeeper. Turbos up 5-1.
Just minutes later, it looked like the Turbos were ready to get their 6th of the game as R. Monterio would take a pass from M. Olavarria and start making his way up the right sideline. After getting by 1 defender, he pushed the ball into the middle of the field where O. Rico made her move to the goal, but was caught from behind by a speedy defender to thwart off the threat. The Turbos were determined to keep the pressure on!
But the Millburn team wasn’t ready to just hand the Turbos the game. They got their second wind and put some pressure with a flurry of shots at the Turbos goal. G. Falcon would rack up a bunch of his game high 15 saves during this flurry, but eventually the Millburn team broke through. They got themselves back in the game with back to back goals in the 48th and 50th minutes. Turbos up 5-3 with 10 minutes to go.
If the Turbos were flustered, they didn’t show it. Determined to make sure the Millburn team couldn’t get any closer, D. Quishpi, D. Zokner and N. Henriques locked down the defensive third of the field the rest of the way. G. Falcon rushed out to get to any loose ball before Millburn players could get their shots off…and the midfield and forward did their part by rushing back to help the defense. It was a true team effort the rest of the way to make sure they wouldn’t concede another goal. But the Turbos weren’t done. They would put the icing on the cake in the 57th minute as D. Zokner would lead a charge from the back and find M. Shamy who would net the final goal of the game…Turbos up 6-3!!
..and that’s how it would end. The EYS Turbos would go to 1-0 on the EDP Spring Season with a 6-3 victory over the Millburn SC Flash! It was a true team effort if ever there was one! The Turbos played for each other and were in control of the game from the opening whistle. CONGRATULATIONS EYS TURBOS!!!
