..the EDP Season is finally under way!!
The EYS Turbos took their game to the road for the EDP Futures Fall 2017 season opener against the Scotch Plains team this past weekend. The game took place on the grass fields of Ponderosa Park, which usually slow the Turbos up a bit...but they came ready for the challenge.
The EYS Turbos suited up in their away white kits. Scotch Plains in their home blue kits.
The Turbos came out flying in this one and were determined to get on the scoreboard early. Early pressure on the midfield and defense by the Turbo team would make it happen. C. Henao jumped on a loose ball in the midfield and quickly turned play up field with a beautiful leading pass to a sprinting L. Henriques at forward. The speedy forward would catch up to the pass and he had his mind made up on his next move as he took the pass, cut to the net and ripped a shot past the goalkeeper!!
Turbos lead 1-0 in the 3rd minute of play!!!
That would be all of the scoring for the first half, but not because of lack of effort or chances. The EYS Turbos jumped all over the Scotch Plains team and wore them down for the second half of play. With gorgeous passing combinations all over the field, the Turbos found themselves with plenty of chances after shifting the defense around. On the right side, I. Nieves and O. Rico consistently took the ball deep into the opposing zone and made terrific crosses into the middle where C. Henao and D. Zokner were waiting. C. Henao would hit the crossbar on a shot from outside the box, and D. Zokner put a couple just wide of the goal. On the left side, N. Osorto and M. Shamy were not to be outdone as they too would get the ball deep and make beautiful crosses of their own..and when the crosses weren't there, they were getting great shots off, but going just wide of the goal on several occasions. When the crosses weren't there from the sides, the midfield was finding ways to get the ball up quickly to L. Henriques, R. Monteiro and I. Contreras at forward. I. Contreras almost put a couple past the goalie early on breakaways, but was just caught from behind by the scrambling defense.
On the backline, D. Quishpi and D. Lyons made sure nothing was getting by them. Constantly protecting the middle and turning forwards to the outside, they gave the Scotch Plains forwards nothing to play with when they were on the attack. Meanwhile, G. Falcon was tested a few times early as well, but was up to the task. None bigger than on a free kick from just outside the penalty box. The Turbo midfielders set up a wall to block the shot, but the Scotch Plains forward was able to get his shot over the wall. An alert G. Falcon saw the ball just as it cleared the wall and dove to his left. Completely stretched out, he was able to get his hands on it and keep the opponents off the score sheet before D. Lyons would jump on the rebound and clear it from danger.
As the first half was coming to a close, the Turbos would lose a player for the day as O. Rico rolled her ankle while battling a player up the right sideline. She would be done for the day, but not before giving her all and controlling the right side of the field.
The EYS Turbos put together a terrific effort in the first half, and were up 1-0..but they were clearly in control of the game on this day.
The second half started in exactly the same way as the first with the Turbos pouncing on the Scotch Plains team quickly. After a shot from C. Henao found it's way into the goalkeeper's hands, I. Nieves would steal the goal kick on the restart, cut inside past a defender and blast a shot into the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 2-0 in the 32nd minute!!!
The Turbos kept pressing. R. Monteiro and N. Osorto would take a couple of shots that went just wide of the net which would have extended the lead. I. Contreras constantly tried to set his teammates up for goals with drives up the middle and laying the ball off to the wings for shot after shot, but the Scotch Plains goal was equal to the task and kept the score close.
Halfway through the 2nd half, the Turbos would lose a second player to injury on the day. N. Osorto gave his all up and down the left sideline before he had to come out with a foot injury. He would be done for the day as well.
With the game winding down and just 15 minutes to go, the Turbos hard work and pressure finally wore down the opponents. In the 45th minute, I. Contreras would play the ball up the left wing from his defensive position to M. Shamy. M. Shamy and C. Henao would combine from some great one touch passing up the sideline before eventually turning the ball into the middle to Birthday Boy D. Quishpi at forward. He would extend the lead to 3 after receiving the pass from the left side and sliding it past the opposing goalie!!
Turbos lead 3-0!!!
The Turbos weren't done just yet. 5 minutes later in the 50th minute...they struck again. This time, they turned defense into offense and put the game away for good. After a shot from the left side, G. Falcon made the save and quickly ran the ball across to the right side of the penalty box and laid it off to D. Lyons. The forwards ran in quickly to try to steal it, but with a quick move to the outside, D. Lyons had nothing but field in front of him...and the speedy L. Henriques. From the defensive side of the field, D. Lyons put a perfect through ball up in the air as L. Henriques ran from his center forward position down the right side to catch up to it. He picked up the ball and stayed under control as he cut towards the goal and blasted a shot across the goal and into the lower corner of the net!
Turbos lead 4-0!!!
The defense and midfield of the Turbos would help ensure the shutout as the I. Contreras and D. Quishpi would lock down the wings and D. Zokner would control the middle to keep the Scotch Plains team from posing any more threats to get on the scoreboard!
GAME OVER!!
It was a complete team effort on a sunny Sunday afternoon in September. The defense did what they were supposed to and kept the opponents chances limited. When the Scotch Plains team did get shots on goal, G. Falcon was alert and ready to make sure nothing got by him. The midfield passed back and forth all day to keep the opponents confused and running all over the field. When they had a chance to feed the forward, they did so with great through balls all day. Meanwhile, the forwards took their chances and streaked in on goal whenever they had a chance..and when the chances weren't there, they slowed the pace down and waited for their wings to catch up to lay the ball off creating chance after chance on goal. You couldn't have asked for a more complete team effort!!
With the victory, the Turbos pick up their first 3 points of the season and sit in a 6 way tie at the top of the standings.
