The EYS Turbos took the field this past weekend for games 5 & 6 of the EDP season with back to back weekend games. The Turbos came into the weekend in 4th place overall on points, but with games in hand that could still bring them to a tie for first place overall. In order to keep their hopes for 1st place alive, the Turbos would first have to take on the only undefeated team left in the league in SDFC who came into the weekend a perfect 6-0.
EYS Turbos (3-0-1) vs. SDFC (6-0-0)
Game 1 of the weekends would be played in the Turbos' friendly confines of O'Brien Park in Elizabeth. The Turbos would be playing in their home whites, while the visiting SDFC team dawned their road yellows. The last time the Turbos faced the SDFC squad was just over 1 year ago in one of their first ever games...and they would drop that game by the score of 7-1. The Turbos have come a long way since then, and they were ready to show everyone just how far they've come. From the start, this game had all the makings of an instant classic. Both teams came prepared to play and give everyone in attendance a game for the ages.
The game kicked off and immediately got out to a furious pace with both teams marching up and down the field, but the defenses held tight. The visiting SDFC team had an early series of corner kicks and almost broke through in the 6th minute, but G. Falcon snatched a ball at the near post that was headed for the back of the net. It would be the last real chance the SDFC team would have in the first half. The defensive combinations of D. Quishpi, N. Henriques, D. Lyons and L. Henriques had their game faces on and put on an almost perfect defensive display the rest of the way. They gave SDFC nothing. Every time SDFC came down the sides, midfielders O. Rico and I. Nieves on the right, and M. Shamy and N. Osorto on the left were there to slow up the rushes enough for the defense to come in and make stop the attacks. Up the middle, D. Zokner and C. Henao made sure there was no passage and kept forcing the play away. It was a flawless defensive performance.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Turbos were right on point as well. Playing a great possession game, the Turbos didn't force the play and took what the defense gave them. When they shut down the sides, the Turbos would switch the play to the opposite side of the field and start their attack again. When the middle was there, C. Henao and D. Zokner would feed through balls all day long to O. Rico and I. Nieves on the right...or M. Shamy and N. Osorto on the left. Up front, the rotating forward duo of I. Contreras and L. Henriques were ready and waiting for crosses to be sent in from the sides, or through balls from the middle. They took every chance they had and tested the opposing goalkeeper early and often, but he was equal to the task.
The game would remain scoreless for almost the entire first half, but it was one of the most exciting scoreless halves you could ever want to see.
With the half winding to a close...the Turbos kept pressing hard, and after hitting the post a few times, they eventually would break the scoreless tie. With 1 minute left to play in the half, the Turbos would build play from the back. D. Quishpi played the ball up the side to I. Nieves. He would move the ball up the field with the help of C. Henao and some nice combination passing. Eventually, I. Nieves would take the ball deep into the right side and cut in towards the goal. With no clear shot to be taken, he sent a ball across the net to the left side, where N. Osorto darted in from his left wing position and tapped in the pass just before it went past the post and out!!
Turbos lead 1-0 in the 30th minute!!!
The Turbos were on the board, and it looked like they would carry the 1-0 lead into the half...but that wouldn't be the case. As the SDFC team lined up for the kick off with seconds to play in the half, the Turbos rushed in and stole the kick off pass. I. Contreras made the steal and starting charging the defense. With the opponents closing down on him, he played the ball off to the side to I. Nieves, who quickly passed it back with a one touch leading pass. With time running out, I. Contreras took the pass first touch and took a high looping shot on goal. The goalie reached for it, but it was too high over his head and landed in the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 2-0 in the 30th minute!!!
Just as the ball landed in the back of the net, the referee blew the halftime whistle and the Turbos would take a 2 goal lead into the half.
The second half played out much like the first half in the beginning with both teams moving the ball well up and down the field. In the 45th minute, the SDFC team would threaten as they earned a free kick from just outside the penalty box. G. Faclon lined his Turbo wall up near the goal line covering the net to his right..and he positioned himself to the left. It was a direct kick on goal..and a blistering shot at that. The shot looked like it was headed into the back of the net when G. Faclon reached up to make the save and his wall stepped up to clear the rebound before the SDFC forwards could get to it. The Turbo defense and goalie worked well together to keep the opponents off the scoreboard!
In the 47th minute, the Turbos would extend their lead. Play again would build from the right this time as D. Lyons played a ball up to O. Rico. After a quick move inside, she connected with C. Henao who would lead I. Contreras with a nicely placed through ball. I. Contreras went straight at the defense, and with them closing in on him, he spotted N. Osorto charging in from the left. He laid the ball off softly to the left where N. Osorto ran onto it at top speed and ripped a shot into the back of the net. The goalie never had a chance.
Turbos lead 3-0 in the 47th minute!!!
Determined to make this a game, the SDFC team would pull one back a few minutes later to make the score 3-1. The goal didn't seem to discourage the Turbos much. The kept pressing. The midfield locked down play in the middle and helped the defense as the SDFC team kept pushing everyone up to try to get another goal. With the SDFC team pushing everyone up, the Turbos took their chance to strike again, this time on the counterattack. N. Henriques would make a steal and play the ball up to D. Zokner in the midfield. He would barrel down the middle of the field with the ball and with a defender blocking his view on goal, he passed the ball up through the middle to L. Henriques at forward. The speedy forward saw his chance, out ran the defense and blasted a shot into the back of the net to extend the lead to 3 once again!!
Turbos lead 4-1 in the 58th minute!!!
Just 2 minutes left to play..and the Turbos seemed to be well in control of the game, but it's never over until the final whistle blows. With time winding down, the SDFC squad pushed everyone up the field to try and tie the game. In the last two minute of play, they would pull back another goal to get the score to 4-2. With just seconds remaining, the Turbos were up 2...but SDFC wasn't finished either. They stormed the Turbos right off the kick off and took a shot from just outside the penalty box that was too high for G. Falcon to reach to make the score 4-3..but it was too little too late. On the resuming kick off, the referee would blow the final whistle as the Turbos kicked off.
TURBOS WIN 4-3!!!!
With the win, the Turbos took down the last undefeated team in their division, and ensured themselves the opportunity to compete for a 1st place in their division!
It was one of the most exciting games of the year..and the Turbos came out on top showing everyone in attendance what great team work can do!

EYS Turbos (4-0-1) vs. East Brunswick (3-1-2)
Coming off an exhilarating home win the previous day, the EYS Turbos took to the field again on Sunday, this time on the road against East Brunswick. The location was a familiar one for the Turbos. The game would take place on the fields where the Turbos played their first ever travel games just a year ago in the East Brunswick tournament. Last time they faced the East Brunswick team at the tournament, the Turbos played to a 2-2 draw as the East Brunswick team snatched the victory away from the Turbos on a last minute goal. They were determined not to let that happen again on this day.
Unlike the previous day, this game had a bit of a slower pace to start. The grass field slowed the game down a bit more than usual, and maybe the Turbos were a little fatigued from the previous days game. Whatever the case..the Turbos still came ready to play.
The familiar defensive combinations of D. Lyons, N. Henriques, D. Quishpi and L. Henriques manned the backline. As usual, they went into shutdown mode early allowing the host team nothing. Aside from a few shots early from distance that really posed no threat to G. Falcon in goal, the defense was in total control. It's often said that defense wins games...and that would be the case on this day as they 4 defenders combined for a PERFECT performance on the day. Nothing got through them. They allowed very few uncontested shots on goal..and when the East Brunswick team tried to outsmart them with deep through balls...G. Falcon was quick off his line to clear the threat.
With the defense taking care of the opposing forwards, the Turbo midfielders did their part to control the space between the penalty boxes. O. Rico and I. Nieves dominated the right sideline with quick moves past their defenders and swift crosses to the middle. On the left side, N. Osorto and M. Shamy used their speed and quick passing to dominate their sideline. In the middle, C. Henao and D. Zokner used their incredible vision and touch on the ball to move lead their wingers and forwards into attacking positions. Up front, the I. Contreras and R. Monteiro gave the opposing defenders and goalie nightmares by positioning themselves in front of the goal and continuously blasting shots on goal.
In the 18th minute, the score sheet was opened. As is their custom...the Turbos scored by turning defense into offense. N. Henriques ran up from his left back position to intercept a pass on the left side and played the ball up to N. Osorto. Using his speed to move up the left sideline, he got past his defender and pushed a ball to the center where I. Contreras was waiting. I. Contreras settled the pass coming from his left side, turned the ball onto his right foot and slammed the ball into the back of the net between two defenders!!
Turbos lead 1-0 in the 18th minute!!!
The rest of the first half would be quiet on the scoreboard, but there was plenty of action otherwise as the Turbos continued to threaten to extend the lead, but just couldn't find the back of the net. D. Quishpi nearly extended the lead in the 25th minute as he was on the receiving end of a through ball from C. Henao but just couldn't catch up to it as the goalie snatched it up just as he was about to drive it home. Likewise, L. Henriques had a clear breakaway at one point after a beautiful through ball was sent up field splitting the defense by D. Zokner, but the referee blew the call and whistled him offisde when he was clearly not. Tough break..but the Turbos carried the 1-0 lead into the half.
The second half played out a lot like the first. There was tons of play in the midfield and in the offensive zone for the Turbos, but the shots kept missing the mark. The Turbos would be forced to shift things around a bit in the second half as I. Contreras would have to sit out most of the half with a leg injury. R. Monteiro and L. Henriques would platoon at forward the rest of the way, with both having great chances to build the lead, but the East Brunswick goalie was able to keep them off the score sheet. In the 46th minute, M. Shamy nearly put the lead to 2 goals as a cross from I. Nieves on the right was headed to the far post, but M. Shamy just couldn't reach it in time to poke it in.
In the 50th minute, the Turbos would put the icing on the cake. D. Quishpi put a move on his attacking forward on the right side and slid a ball nicely up to O. Rico waiting at midfield. She burst up the right side and quickly pulled the ball back letting her defender keep running past her. With time and space, she looked up and placed a ball neatly into the path of C. Henao. He quickly pushed the ball in front of him with a leading touch...ran up onto the ball and blasted a shot from just outside the penalty box and into the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 2-0!!!
The East Brunswick team tried to battle back in the last 10 minutes throwing shots in from deep in the midfield as the defense would give them nothing close. G. Falcon was equal to all of their shots compiling 10 saves on the day..and helping to secure the shutout!!
Turbos win 2-0!!!

The weekend was a GREAT one for the Turbos...not only because of the results, but more were the epitome of teamwork. In both games, EVERYONE did their part and played their roles perfectly to ensure team success. The players were unselfish, looking to set each other up and make the right play for the team, foregoing individual success. They won..but win or loss...the showed everyone what true team work is all about..and were justly rewarded!!!
With the victory, the Turbos move to 5-0-1 on the season. Their 15 points in the table have them firmly in 2nd place. The only two teams in front of them with 18 points both have an extra game played, technically placing the Turbos in a 3 way tie for first place if they can get a victory on their game in hand.
The EYS Turbos will be back on the field next weekend when they'll go on the road to face the BSM Elite Tigers. The game will take place at the Palisades Park Sports Complex and is scheduled to kick of at 12:15pm.
LET'S GO TURBOS!!!
