EYS TURBOS fall to World Class FC.
After a terrific run of 5 straight games unbeaten, including 4 wins in a row, the EYS Turbos winning streak has come to an end.
Sunday’s game at Kenah field featured the battle of the only two undefeated teams left in the league. EYS Turbos came in at 4-0-0. World Class FC came in at 5-0-0, having played an extra game.
The game started in a fashion the EYS Turbos weren’t used to. Having only surrendered 11 goals in 4 games coming into the day, the Turbos weren’t used to getting scored on…especially early. But that’s what happened on Sunday. Just 3 minutes into the game, the Turbos found themselves down 1-0 as the World Class FC forward would score the first of his many goals on the day.
The Turbos defense of N. Henriques, D. Quishpi and D. Lyons would settle in from having given up the early goal and would control the backline for most of the rest of the half. Likewise, M. Shamy, D. Zokner and N. Osorto would take reigns in the midfield and lock things down for most of the rest of the half. The World Class FC team was having a hard time keeping up with the Turbos in the midfield, but their forward, #19, gave the Turbos defense and goalies fits all day. He ripped off shot after shot, and was turned away for most of the first half by G. Falcon who had a season high 11 saves in the first half alone.
In the 20th minute, he would break through again and put the Turbos down 2-0. But the Turbos weren’t ready to hand the game over to #19 just yet. They battled back and in the 27th minute broke through to get on the board as I. Contreras would receive a leading pass from C. Henao and drill one past the World Class FC goalie. Turbos on the board…down 2-1.
Not to be outdone, #19 would make his mark again, this time with an assist. With the defense bearing down on him determined not to let him score again, he took a shot that deflected to another World Class FC player who slid the ball past a diving G. Falcon. Turbos down 3-1.
That’s how the first half would end. The Turbos weren’t playing their best game, but they were doing all they could to manage the tall forward from the visiting team.
Unfortunately, the Turbos wouldn’t fare much better in the second half. The World Class FC team kept feeding the ball to their forward early and often, and before the Turbos knew it, they were down 6-1 as #19 would score again in the 31st, 32nd and 36th minutes of the game.
The Turbos would adjust and start man marking the tall opposing forward. It paid off for a little while as they kept World Class FC off the score sheet for the next 15 minutes of play, but it meant that not much offense was generated from the Turbo side as well. Eventually, #19 would strike again in the 51st minute, Turbos down 7-1.
Determined to get back in the game, the Turbos seemed to get a bit of a second wind late and rushed up the field on the kick off. R. Monteiro would find himself in front of the net and was able to get a couple of shots off to try to get the Turbos closer, but the World Class FC goalie was equal to the task. D. Zokner would also find himself one on one with the opposing goalie, but as luck would have it, the shot went straight into the goalies hands. The ball would eventually find it’s way to the foot of I. Nieves who slammed one home past the visiting goalie in the 52nd minute.
Turbos down 7-2.
Just as quickly, World Class FC responded, again with #19 being involved in the play. With the defense bearing down on the tall forward, he played a ball across the goal to a waiting player who put the visiting team up 8-2 just second later. Just after the 8th goal, the Turbos goalie, G. Falcon would have to be substituted out of the game having taken a blistering shot to the chest. D. Lyons jumped up off the bench and was ready to go. 5 minutes later, the Turbos would surrender a penalty on a questionable call that seemed to be just outside the penalty box, but the penalty was awarded nonetheless. #19 would strike again for his 7th goal of the game, capping the scoring for the visitors and putting the Turbos down 9-2. D. Lyons made a valiant effort at the shot, and got his hand on it, but the shot was too high and strong to keep out of the net as it brushed off his fingertips.
With the game all but decided, the Turbos refused to stop playing and kept pushing until the very end. After L. Henriques broke up the left sideline, he sent a ball across the goal to a waiting O. Rico at forward. She quickly got a shot off that bounced off the keepers legs and right back to her for a follow up shot, but the keeper was quick to get to that one too. The Turbos kept pushing..and were determined not to be denied one final goal.
Off the ensuing goal kick, C. Henao and L. Henriques swarmed the defense and caused a turnover. C. Henao played the ball up to L. Henriques who sent a high cross into the goal box. This time a rushing M. Olavarria was able to get to the ball before the goalie could come out for it and took the ball on one bounce and slipped it past the keeper for the final goal of the game in the 59th minute. Turbos down 9-3.
The ref would blow the final whistle just seconds after that final goal. Game over.
The Turbos didn’t have their best game of the year, but they played hard and never game up all day. Even after going down early, they kept battling and never seemed to get too discouraged. It was their first loss of the season, and cemented them firmly in second place with one game left to play. A valiant effort by the EYS Turbos...it just wasn't their day. They took the loss like champs though, and are eager to get back on the pitch to return to their winning ways!
