The EYS Turbos kicked off the 2017 Fall season with a terrific tournament performance at the Piscataway Fall Classic this past weekend. The tournament schedule consisted of 4 games over 2 days, and the Turbos did not disappoint, playing with heart and determination all weekend long!! The Turbos would end up splitting both days, going 2-2 overall for the tournament.
Day 1:
10am vs. Berkeley Heights YSC Rovers
12pm vs. Piscataway SC Bayern Munich
Day 2:
8am vs. Sayreville SA Bombers
10am vs. Scotch Plains Fanwood SA SPF Pulisic
Game 1: EYS Turbos vs. Berkeley Heights YSC Rovers
Game 1 vs. Berkeley Heights would end with a 4-3 Turbo victory. The Turbos took the lead early in this one on a goal from I. Nieves in the 2nd minute who stole a pass deep in the attacking zone and blasted a shot into the back of the net!!
Turbos lead 1-0.
But the lead was short lived as the Turbos would surrender a goal 1 minute later..and then surrender another goal in the 6th minute. Early on, this game had a lot of excitement and looked like it would be a high scoring affair.
Turbos down 2-1 early on.
Both teams would settle down after the early scoring as O. Rico, N. Osorto and C. Henao took command of the midfield and the defensive duo of D. Lyons and N. Henriques would take control of the back line. G. Falcon would also come up with some huge save to keep the score at 2-1.
In the 13th minute, M. Shamy would help the Turbos tie the game with a quick run up the left sideline and a quick pass into the middle to C. Henao who would rip a curling shot into the upper corner of the net to tie the game at 2 to cap the scoring for the 1st half.
Turbos tied 2-2.
Just 2 minutes into the 2nd half, the Turbos would take the lead as again M. Shamy start a drive up the left side and blast a shot that was blocked and deflected to a waiting D. Lyons who made a quick move to get a around a defender and blast a shot into the bottom of the net to give the Turbos the lead.
Turbos up 3-2.
The lead wouldn't last long however as a questionable penalty call was awarded to the Berkeley team in the 30th minute. G. Falcon guessed correctly and nearly made the save, but the ball went just past his outstretched body and the opposing team would tie the game.
Turbos tied 3-3.
The game would remained tied at 3 for the next 15 minutes with plenty of back and forth. O. Rico almost broke the tie with a shot that went just wide of the goal...and just minutes later, R. Monteiro had a break on net that was stopped by the rushing goalie. The game was tight and poised to go down to the wire.
In the 45th minute, the Turbos would break the tie. N. Osorto stole the ball at midfield and flew down the left sideline. After making a quick cut inside to his right, he centered the ball to D. Quishpi who beat the keeper with a high shot!
Turbos leads 4-3.
In the last 2 minutes of the game, the Berkeley team threw everything at the Turbos. They sent their goalie up for corners and packed everyone into the Turbo side of the field. N. Henriques and D. Lyons held down the back..and G. Falcon made a flurry of saves late...and FINALLY the final whistle blew.
GREAT TEAM EFFORT ALL AROUND TO EARN THE WIN!! TURBOS WIN 4-3.
SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD FROM THE OTHER OPPOSING TEAM WAS GIVEN TO N. OSORTO!
Game 2: EYS Turbos vs. Piscataway SC Bayern Munich
Game 2 would put the Turbos up against the tournament hosts, Piscataway SC Bayern Munich. The Turbos would drop this game 4-2, but not before battling back hard and almost pulling it out.
The Turbos had to battle back the entire game against the host team as they surrendered 2 first half goals in the 13th and 21st minutes.
The Turbos had plenty of chances early on, but the opposing goalie came up with some big saves. Not to be outdone, G. Falcon kept the score close for the Turbos stopping shot after shot as the host team seemed to have fresher legs as they substituted 5 players at a time. The first half would end early with the Turbos down 2-0.
The second half started much like the first, and the host team struck again in the 24th minute to increase the lead.
Turbos down 3-0.
But Turbos don't give up. They kept their cool and battled back. In the 31st minute, with some great combination play from the back line to the midfield to the forwards, the Turbos pulled one back. N. Henriques would take a goal kick from G. Falcon and play it up to I. Nieves on the right. He would work the ball to the middle of the field to C. Henao, who quickly shifted the play to N. Osorto on the left. With D. Lyons sneaking up from his defensive position, he would pounce on a rebound off a shot from N. Osorto and take a shot himself that bounced around in the penalty box before D. Quishpi jumped on it and buried a goal into the back of the net.
Turbos down 3-1.
The Turbos would come close again just minutes later as R. Monteiro and M. Shamy connected in the midfield, but a shot from M. Shamy went just wide.
In the 43rd minute, the Turbos would strike again. N. Henriques would play a ball up the right side to O. Rico who found C. Henao in the middle. He would take a shot that was blocked by a Piscataway defender's hand...and Henao was awarded a penalty shot. He eyed the goalie down and blasted a ball right down the middle. The goalie got his hands on it, but the shot was too strong and slid past his hands and into the back of the net.
Turbos down 3-2.
The host team would not be outdone however, as they quickly took the restart kickoff and pushed down the field. Playing with just one defender to try to tie the game, the Turbos were caught short handed in the back and the host team would score the final goal of the game in the 44th minute.
Game over. Turbos drop this one 4-2.
GREAT EFFORT TO BATTLE BACK FROM AN EARLY DEFICIT!!
SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD FROM THE OTHER OPPOSING TEAM WAS GIVEN TO G. FALCON!
Game 3: EYS Turbos vs. Sayerville SA Bombers
Game 3 pitted the Turbos against a familiar team. They would play the Sayerville SA Bombers who they'd faced just a couple of months ago in the Father's Day tournament. They would end up dropping the game in the Father's Day tournament to the hosts in heartbreaking fashion, but were determined not to let it happen again...and they did not disappoint take the rematch and winning 6-5!
This one didn't start out well for the Turbos, who seem to always start a little shaky when they have early games. It was an 8am kickoff, and by 8:03am, the Turbos found themselves down 2-0 as the Sayerville team jumped on the Turbos early scoring in the 1st and 3rd minutes.
Turbos down 2-0.
They shook it off..and bounced back quickly though. In the 10th minute, I. Nieves would receive a leading pass from C. Henao and break in one on one with the opposing goalie. Making no mistake about it...he buried a shot across the goal and into the back of the net!
Turbos down 2-1.
Just 2 minutes later, O. Rico would play a ball from the right side into D. Quishpi who made a quick move by a defender and blasted a shot...that was blocked by a Sayerville player's hand. D. Quishpi would be awarded a penalty shot...and he took it with confidence...going high and to the keeper's left with a blistering shot!!
Turbos tied 2-2.
Sayerville would get another goal in the 16th minute to take the lead 3-2...but the Turbos were determined to pull one back before the half...and they did just that. In the 25th minute, D. Lyons would play a ball up from his Left Back position to M. Shamy. He would battle past 2 defenders on the side and get the ball into C. Henao in the middle, who quickly played it up to D. Quisphi deep in the offensive zone. With no shot to take, D. Quishpi put the ball across the goal high in the air, to a rushing I. Nieves who struck it on first touch out of the air and into the back of the net!!
Turbos pulled one back and the first half would end 3-3.
The Turbos would take the momentum from the last goal to end the first half and carry that into the 2nd half. N. Henriques would chase a ball down deep into the defensive zone and play it up R. Monteiro on the right. He would pass it into the middle to D. Zokner who switched to play to the opposite side of the field with a leading pass to I. Nieves. He would use his speed to beat his defender down the right side and lay a pass into I. Contreras at forward who easily passed the ball into the back of an open net!
Turbos lead 4-3 in the 35th minute!
Just one minute later...the Turbos would strike again. I. Nieves would steal the ball off the restart and kick the ball up field. I. Contreras turned on the jets to beat the defense to the ball and walked in one on one against the opposing goalie. After a quick fake to the right, he pulled the ball to his left side and again passed the ball into the bottom of an open net!!
Turbos leads 5-3 in the 36th minute!
But the Sayerville team wasn't about to lay down. They battled back in the 41st and 44th minutes with two goals of their own to tie the game.
Turbos tied 5-5.
With just 6 minutes left to play, the Turbos were facing a draw after giving up a two goal lead. It looked as though the Sayerville team would take the lead in the 48th minute as they broke down the middle 3 on 1. After pulling the defender off to one side, they sent the ball to the right side of the field and the forward was in one on one against the Turbo goalkeeper. G. Falcon rushed off his line to meet the forward and blocked a blistering shot to keep the game tied. The rebound bounced out to D. Lyons who quickly played the ball up the right sideline. I. Nieves broke past the midfield in the other direction and played a through ball into the offensive zone for a charging I. Contreras. With 1 minute left to play...I. Contreras rushed in and buried a shot into the lower left corner of the net to complete the hat trick!
Turbos lead 6-5 in the 49th minute!
The Sayerville team would have one more chance in the final seconds as they won a corner kick from the right side. As the ball came in, N. Osorto rushed to meet it and booted it up to the midfield...the ref blew the final whistle!!
Turbos win 6-5!!!!
SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD FROM THE OTHER OPPOSING TEAM WAS GIVEN TO N. OSORTO!
Game 4: EYS Turbos vs. Scotch Plains Fanwood SA SPF Pulisic
The final game of the tournament pitted the Turbos up against the Scotch Plains team. The Turbos would drop this one 6-4, but they'll have their chance to even the score with the Scotch Plains in a Crossover League game later this month.
The Turbos would take command of this game early on...but watch it slip away late. The defense of D. Lyons and N. Henriques stood tall early on as the Scotch Plains sent their tall forwards up early and often with the ball..but they turned them away each time blocking several shot attempts and turned the ball back the other way. C. Henao also chipped in on defense as the opponents pressed early.
In the 7th minute, the Turbos took the lead. N. Osorto pushed the ball into the offensive zone and crossed the ball into the penalty box. D. Quishpi ran to meet the ball and took a shot that hit a Scotch Plains defender in the hand. The referee awarded the controversial penalty shot..and D. Quishpi would make it count. He buried a shot high into the corner of the net to give the Turbos the lead!
Turbos lead 1-0.
2 minutes later in the 9th minute, I. Nieves would increase the lead to 2. He rushed in and stole the goalkeeper's pass off a restart and walked in to put the ball past him with a low shot across the goal!
Turbos lead 2-0.
Scotch Plains would battle back just as quickly, tied the game with 2 goals in the 15th and 19th minutes.
Turbos tied 2-2.
Resilient as ever...the Turbos bounced back. In the 22nd minute, the Turbos peppered Scotch Plains with shot after shot from O. Rico, M. Shamy and R. Monteiro..but the Scotch Plains defense blocked them all. Eventually, the ball bounced to M. Shamy who passed from the left side to I. Contreras. He would dribble across the the penalty box and blast a shot past the diving Scotch Plains goalkeeper in the 22nd minute!
Turbos lead 3-2!
...just 4 minutes later...the Turbos would strike again. This time D. Zokner would come in from the left side and send a ball across the middle to R. Moneteiro. The ball came across with pace, and R. Monterio rushed up to meet it and drive a low and hard shot into the far right corner of the net!
Turbos lead 4-2 in the 26th minute.
Just as the half was coming to an end, the Scotch Plains team would manage to pull one back as the broke in one on one against G. Falcon. It was a bullet of a shot that G. Falcon managed to get his hands on, but it was a little too high and hard to handle in the 27th minute..
The half would end with the Turbos leading 4-3.
The second half wasn't as nice to the Turbos as the first unfortunately. The Scotch Plains team would score 3 unanswered in the 2nd half as they threw everything at the Turbos. Perhaps a little tired...and a little out of sync due to the constant unexplained stoppages by the referee, the Turbos just couldn't hold onto the lead. The Turbo highlight of the second half came from goalkeeper G. Falcon who kept the deficit at 2 late in the game. As the Turbos pushed hard to get one back, the Scotch Plains team broke free on the right side and rushed up field. The Scotch Plains right midfielder ripped a low and hard shot that was destined for the back of the net, but G. Falcon dove out to his left and made the stop...the rebound bounced directly back to the forward who again blasted a shot that had eyes for the goal when out of no where, while still on the ground, G. Falcon threw out his right hand and stopped the ball from going in the net again just as the Scotch Plains team began to celebrate the would be goal.
The final whistle blew...Turbos would lose this one 6-4.
Great team effort!!
The opposing team forgot to hand out their choice for the Sportsmanship Award this game...so I'm giving it to the WHOLE TURBO TEAM!
All in all, it was a great tournament weekend! As always, the Turbos played with heart, even when the chips were down, and made us all proud!!
On defense, D. Quishpi, N. Henriques and D. Lyons did their usual job of controlling the back line and building play from the back, while G. Falcon was assertive and agile in goal to keep the opponents off the scoreboard.
In the midfield, C. Henao, I. Nieves, O. Rico, N. Osorto, M. Shamy and D. Zokner controlled the flow of the game by helping on defense, and pushing the ball up to the forwards.
Up front, I. Contreras and R. Monteiro kept the opponents under constant pressure giving the defenders fits.
