The EYS Turbos were up bright and EARLY on Father’s Day weekend for some morning soccer (Happy Father's Day Turbo Dads)! They took the short trek down to Sayreville for the 22nd Annual Father’s Day tournament. The tournament schedule consisted of 3 games, spread across 2 days.
Day 1:
8am vs. Sayreville SA Bombers
10am vs. Queen City Plainfield Jr. FC
Day 2:
8am vs. Sayreville SA SSC Jr. Bulldogs
Game 1: EYS Turbos vs. Sayreville SA Bombers
The first game of the day was against the tournament hosts top U8 team. Though physically much bigger than the Turbos, the EYS Turbos were not intimidated. Wearing their tournament camouflage jerseys, the Turbos took the field. The game started out a bit slower than normal, probably because of the early start time, but started to pick up pace as the first half went along.
The opponents would get on the board first in the 12th minute taking the lead 1-0. But that wouldn’t last long. Just 3 minutes later in the 15th minute, the Turbos would even the score. D. Quishpi would steal the ball at the left back position and pass it to C. Henao at midfield. C. Henao would turn up the field quickly and draw to defenders to him going up the middle. With a quick look to the right, he saw I. Nieves running up the sideline and would lay a beautiful through ball between two defenders that I. Nieves would pick up in stride. After a touch forward to set up his shot, I. Nieves would blast home the Turbos first goal of the tournament.
Turbos tied 1-1!
The game wouldn’t stay tied for very long. In the 19th minute, the home team would take the lead again putting one past a diving G. Falcon. Just like before, the Turbos would counter quickly in the 23rd minute. In what was an almost identical play, this time L. Henriques would make the steal on defense and send the ball up to C. Henao at midfield. Again, he would lay a long distance through ball up the right side between the defenders to a rushing I. Nieves. Just like the previous goal, I. Nieves would play the ball forward to himself and blast a low shot to the left post that ripped through the goal net!
Turbos tied 2-2!
The first half would end with both teams even at 2.
The second half wasn’t very kind to the Turbos. Right off the opening kick off the host team would drive down the field and put a low hard shot into the back of the goal in the 25th minute. The Turbos came out a little flat, and paid for it. But, in true Turbo form, the got it back quickly. Just 8 minutes later in the 33rd minute, D. Zokner would send a ball up field from deep in the defensive zone to a streaking I. Contreras. He would go in one on one and make no mistake about it, ripping a shot past the Sayerville keeper.
Turbos tied 3-3!
3 minutes later…the host team would take the lead on a controversial goal. As the Sayreville right wing tried to get past D. Quispi, the two player collided, and the ball kept rolling to the left side of the penalty box. There as no foul, and no foul was called by the referee, but the opposing Coach yelled for a penalty call. Almost immediately, all of the players on the field stopped playing as they heard the opposing Coach scream for a penalty, but the referee waived him off. As the players turned back to the ball to continue play, a Sayreville player kicked the ball into the back of the net, and the referee allowed the goal. It was an unfortunate break, but a lesson learned for the Turbos. Play until you hear a whistle…no matter what.
Turbos down 4-3.
Thanks to the defensive grouping of L. Henriques, D. Quishpi and N. Henriques, the host team didn’t have many more chances the rest of the way. The one chance they did have was a blistering shot from the right side that G. Falcon dove for and kept out of the net to keep the game within 1 goal.
The Turbos pushed hard for the equalizer. N. Osorto and I. Contreras had a few shots go just over the net late in the game. The Turbos were shooting high on the tall goalie, and the high shots would eventually pay off with one final chance. In the final seconds of the game, C. Henao would take a shot from just outside the penalty area that a Sayerville defender would knock down with his arm inside the penalty area. The Turbos would earn the PK with no time left on the clock and one final opportunity to tie the game. Both teams lined up around the penalty area…and C. Henao lined up for his shot. On the referee’s whistle, he would start his run to the ball. C. Henao made perfect contact with the ball and sent a screamer to the upper right hand corner of the keeper’s net. The keeper guessed right and made the save…the rebound bounced back for a final attempt that went just over the crossbar. The referee would blow the final whistle just as the ball went out of play.
The Turbos lost a heart breaker, but not for lack of effort. The game should have at the very least ended in a draw. Both teams played well. If not for the referee’s allowance of a questionable goal, the game should have been a draw. Nonetheless…lesson learned.
Turbos lose game 1 by the final of 4-3.
Game 2: EYS Turbos vs. Queen City Plainfield Jr. SC
The second game of the day would pit the Turbos up against Queen City Plainfield Jr. SC. Again, a much bigger team than them physically, the Turbos came out ready to get back to the winning side of things.
Unlike game 1, there wasn’t much of a feeling out process early. The Turbos would break through in the 6th minute of the game as C. Henao would make a steal at midfield and run in on goal alone. Having put the last game behind him, he was determined to get back on the score sheet and made no mistake as he lay a shot high to the keeper’s left.
Turbos lead 1-0!
The opponents would bounce back just 5 minutes later to tie the game at 1 in the 11th minute. But the game wouldn’t remained tied for very long.
Now that the Turbos were used to the physical play of the opposing team, the quickly turned their game play around and put their quick passing and speed to work. In the 20th minute of play, D. Zokner would read a pass from the defender to the midfield and dart across to intercept the pass. He went straight up the middle of the field and took a shot as soon as he got into the penalty area. It was a low shot to the keeper’s right, giving him no chance at the save.
Turbos lead 2-1!
In true Turbo fashion…the kept pressing. Just 2 minutes later in the 22nd minute, I. Contreras would steal at midfield on the left side and rush in on goal. He turned on the jets and got past the backline. As soon as he was clear of the defense, he ripped a shot to the lower right side of the goal…again, no chance for the keeper.
Turbos lead 3-1!
The first half would end with the Turbos leading 3-1…and their spirits high.
Playing with the lead and a short bench (D. Lyons was unavailable due to injury and R. Monteiro could not attend the Saturday games due to school commitments) the Turbos defenders were getting a little tired. It was time to switch things up a bit. L. Henriques would have his chance at left back giving D. Quishpi and N. Henriques some much needed time away from the backline. The change seemed to energize the rest of the team as both defenders also got a chance to play up in the midfield at various points in the game.
The 2nd half started..and the Turbos came out flying. On the first rush of the game by the opponents, N. Henriques would stop the right wing cold, and pass the ball across the backline to L. Henriques. He would quickly turn the ball to I. Contreras on the left side, who would then send the ball up to D. Quishpi playing forward. D. Quishpi would make a quick move past the defense and put the ball into the back of the opponents net in the 30th minute.
Turbos lead 4-1!
Just 3 minutes later in the 33rd minute, D. Quishpi would strike again. This time N. Osorto would take the ball deep into the right corner before turning and laying a pass into the middle of the box where D. Quishpi would jump on the opportunity. He blasted a shot high over the keeper to give extend the Turbos lead.
Turbos lead 5-1!
The Turbos weren’t done! 3 minutes later in the 36th minute, M. Shamy would add to the lead. D. Zokner would turned defense into offense in the midfield as he would steal a pass and send it off to I. Nieves on the right. I. Nieves would make a cross field pass to the opposite wing where M. Shamy would lay the ball into the back of the net!
Turbos lead 6-1!
A minute later, the Turbos though they’d increase the lead again as I. Nieves took a corner kick and send the ball back to N. Henriques who blasted a shot from outside the penalty box. The ball would deflect and end up on the foot of O. Rico who one timed it into the back of the net, but was slightly offside.
With a comfortable lead, the Turbos kept pushing for more. In just 2 minutes, I. Nieves would add to the lead. In the 41st and 42nd minutes, he would end up with the ball on his feet after stealing passes from the backline and make the opponents pay. With two carefully placed shots in to the lower corners of the net, the Turbos were now up by 7!!
Turbos lead 8-1!
With 8 minutes left to play, the Turbos would move the defense around a bit and send N. Henriques up to play forward form his defensive position. With only one defender in the back, the opponents would close the gap a little in the 45th minute with a goal of their own.
Turbos lead 8-2!
In the 47th minute, with just 3 minutes left to play, the Turbos were eager to get their defender turned forward a goal. After a steady stream of games as “The Wall” and manning the backline, N. Henriques would have his chance to move up with the Turbos having a comfortable lead. Then it happened!!! L. Henriques took a pass from G. Falcon on the restart and used his speed to get up the left sideline quickly. He got by the defender, then the midfielder….and then put a through ball up the line to M. Shamy. M. Shamy cut to his right toward the net and was one on one with the goalie. He looked up and saw a defender coming to him and the goalie far to the side of the net…he also that when the defender moved over, N. Henriques was now alone in front of the net. Instead of shooting, he laid the ball off perfectly to an eagerly waiting N. Henriques…who one timed a shot to the far corner of the net. It seemed like the ball took forever to get over the line, but it did!! N. “The Wall” Henriques was on the score sheet! After helping save countless goals on the backline, he now had his first goal of the season!
Turbos lead 9-2!
The opponents would push and get one more goal in the final minute of play…but it couldn’t put a damper on the game.
Turbos win 9-3!
Game 3: EYS Turbos vs. Sayreville SA SSC Jr. Bulldogs
Day 2…
The next day, the EYS Turbos would have one more game to play. Again, it was an early start at 8am, but this time the Turbos came out ready to play. Having learned their lesson from the previous day’s slow start, they came out fast and furious on day 2.
It was the final game of the tournament, and the Turbos wanted to finish out strong. It didn’t take long for the Turbos to get on the board in this one. Just 2 minutes into the game, D. Zokner found an open I. Contreras up the middle of the field. I. Contreras turned up the speed and went in one on one past the defenders and placed the ball into the back of the net with a powerful shot.
Turbos up 1-0!
5 minute later…the Turbos would strike again. I. Contreras would score his second goal of the game after stealing a pass on the left side, cutting into the penalty box and almost walking the ball into the back of the net.
Turbos lead 2-0!
The Turbos were well in control of the game. The opponents could barely break through the midfield and only managed a few shots in the first half. G. Falcon was equal to the task on all of the shots to keep the Sayreville team off the scoreboard, en route to earning his 4th clean sheet of the season.
In the 14th minute, the Turbos would strike again. R. Monteiro was available for the second day of play, and his fresh legs would pay off. L. Henriques would play the ball deep in to the left corner of the field and cut back to the middle of the field. He took a shot that was blocked and bounced back to him…and then sent a pass across the middle of the penalty box to a waiting R. Monteiro. In what was a weekend of firsts…R. Monteiro was determined to get his first goal of the season. Having come close a few times earlier, R. Monteiro took a shot from just outside the 6 yard box. The ball seemed to have eyes as it went past two defenders…then past a diving goalie…and slowly rolled across the goal line!!! M. Shamy blasted it in after it crossed the goal line to make sure there was not mistake about it, but the goal had been scored! R. Monteiro was on the scoresheet with his first goal of the season!
Turbos lead 3-0!
Off the kick off, the Turbos were flying on all cylinders and hungry for more. In the 14th minute C. Henao stole the ball right from the kick off and sent the ball up to I. Nieves who drilled another one past the keeper.
Turbos lead 4-0!
The Turbos were in the zone! Just one minute later, in the 15th minute the would strike AGAIN! C. Henao again would send the ball up to a wide open R. Monteiro who would lay the ball off to I. Nieves for his 2nd goal of the game as he blasted another ball into the back of the net high over the keeper’s hands!
Turbos lead 5-0!
The Turbos would put on a passing clinic the rest of the way. Not wanting to show up the opposing team, the Turbos would pass the ball around the field and dominate possession the rest of the first half…and into the 2nd half. Knowing that there was a max 6 goal differential for the tournament games, the Turbos held off until the last 5 minutes of the game before attempting another shot on goal. In the 46th minute, the would cap the tournament with one final tally. This time N. Henriques would find N. Osorto on the right side. He would rush up the field and lay a bullet into the back of the net for the final goal of the game.
Turbos lead 6-0!
Turbos win 6-0!
The EYS Turbos made sure it was a Happy Father’s Day with a GREAT tournament showing!!!
On defense, D. Quispi, N. Henriques and L. Henriques shut down opposing forwards and turned defense into offense with spectacular passing from the backline (and even scoring a few goals of their own)! What few shots did get through, G. Falcon made sure to turn away, adding to his clean sheet total in the final game of the tournament!
In the midfield, D. Zokner, I. Nieves, M. Shamy, N. Osorto, and C. Henao moved the ball around effortlessly and made terrific passes to open up the forwards for some great scoring chances!!
At forward, O. Rico, R. Moneteiro and I. Contreras used their speed and finesse to make defenses pay every chance they got!!
